Im currently a student studying film and video and have finally decided to get myself a mac so I can do my video editing at home. All the footage i use is HD or soon full HD and I of course tend to go further with editing as my study and career progresses. I have a decent screen already and I thought with my budget around 1000 euro, a 2nd hand Mac Pro (2x 2.8GHZ Quadcore Intel Xeon) would be a wise investment, specially as time goes on and I can upgrade drives, video card etc... I tend to doubt now as there is still uncertainty over its future.

The budget i have now puts me around the 1000 euro mark, which here in Holland gets me looking at imacs now too. I keep debating if its worth it for me to go for the 2nd hand mac pro or an imac 2011 and onwards.

Is an older mac pro going to be worth my while for my level of video editing? Or better of just going for the imac option now? Not super happy with their glossy screens it has to be said. The more I read and look into it, the more i doubt which option is best.

Have you considered a Hackintosh as an alternative?
On a €1000 budget an i7 based tower with loads of RAM and a 600 series Nvidia card would hammer both your other choices.

I had thought about it and id enjoy building it but i also dont want the hassle with regards to updates. Though maybe its less of a problem than i think. havent done much research into it and how final cut pro x would run etc... It is super tempting as its much better bang for your buck.
