Dear fellow iPad users,

I’m currently thinking about getting a second iPad to work together with my 2015 pro 12.9

It would be nice to have a second device to display books, slides or notes while I’m working on notes or documents. While I currently use split screen - it’s more comfortable to use notability or word on full screen.

now I was thinking about getting an 2019 entry level iPad - and when the time comes, sell my 2015 pro 12.9 and upgrade to

ah part of the message disappeared, strange...

So I was thinking about the following:

a.) Buy a 2019 entry level iPad to use in conjunction with my 2015 12.9 Pro - and sell my 2015 Pro when the 2020 12.9 Pro arrives

b.) Keep the 2015 12.9 Pro and get the battery replaced (either Apple or third party) and buy the new 2020 12.9 Pro. The battery isn't bad, but it isn't as good as it used to be. Coconut battery - if it reads reliably - shows around 82% capactiy left.
My concern with Apple's 99$ replacement is that I'll get a refurbished 2015 12.9, which may have much more wear and tear on the lightning connector, Homebutton and internal SSD.
I'm not so sure either if they will take mine for battery service if the battery is above 80%.

c.) Get a Surface Pro 7 in conjunction with the 2015 12.9 Pro. But there I'm concerned about how practial it is when I want to share files around between the tablets.
What tickles my interest in the surface is basically the better usable Onenote, in my opionion I think that in Onenote the Apple Pencil doesn't write as natural as it does in Apple notes or Notability. It got better in Onenote through the last updates tough.
Another bummer in OneNote for ipadOS is that I cannot record and write/type at the same time, a basic function that Notability provides, as well as Onenote on Windows.

Look into the feasibility of a full-fledged Mac and having your current iPad to help with your mobility needs. That might be better and more productive ultimately with the larger screen. Depends on what works for you, though.

I do have a full fledged Mac (iMac as well as a 2015 Retina) - but since I got my iPad Pro I'm tired of carrying so much tech around - I do have a lot of paper files to carry around too. (even tough they are all digitalised, I still need a lot in paper)

Dual iPads works incredibly well on iPad. Continuity lets us sync up a lot of things so you can do things like copy on one side and paste on the other. Airdrop and iCloud lets us share files and storage. And two iPads is a great way to multitask on iPad.

(BTW. I’m surprised how well the 5 year old gen1 devices work on iOS13. So I don’t consider dual iPads as impractical because we’re actually using perfectly working old tech rather than tossing into a drawer or a landfill.)

@urkel: Thanks for bringing continuity back to my memory - that's a very strong point against solution c.) from my above list.

I might switch back to an iOS phone again - got a free Galaxy S10e from my provider, great phone, great camera, nicely polished version of android and all, but I really miss the simple interactions between my Apple Ecosystem devices I could do as I did with my iPhone 6s back in the day.

Yeah, if I didn’t have a MBP, I could see myself getting a base iPad for an extra ”screen” to my current iPad Pro 11. That said, because I have a MBP, there’s no way I’d consider that right now. But that’s the biggest limitation of an iPad for me - is a “second” screen or ability to work on multiple things at once. This becomes REALLY apparent on my 4K monitor with my MBP. I can have 6-7 things up and all accessible / visible.

I have my iPhone when I’m out and about - it has access to my iCloud (all my files) and photos. My iPad Pro has access to all my files and photos, as well as my MacBook. I can iMessage from any device, answer calls from any device, and I can pick up on one device after leaving another (handoff). Apple’s device continuity is a BIG reason why I pay the Apple Tax “ “.

Lol, I remember reviewing for exams years ago and using two iPad 2s with GoodReader for reading two different books/PDF files. iPad to iPad file transfer is much easier now with AirDrop and iCloud and and so is markup with the Apple Pencil.

It’s incredible that you can get two iPad 7s nowadays for less than the cost of the OG iPad considering I spent $1300+tax ($600 32GB + $700 64GB) on those iPad 2s. I think the iPad 7 is a pretty nice complement to the 2015 Pro 12.9 while you wait for the new Pros to be released.

I agree it’s comforting to know that I can switch seamlessly between My iphone, iPad Pro, iPad mini or MacBook Air and it‘s like they are same device just with different screen sizes/form factors.

When I still had Surface, I was using iPad as a second display using Duet. For file sharing between Windows and iOS I use OneDrive.
