A friend recently got an iPad but he shares it with his wife. We can't text freely anymore because she might see it. Are there any messaging apps that are secure when there are multiple users on a device?

You could use Signal. It’s a reputable private messenger app. He could disable notifications and turn on touch/faceID protection for a pretty stealthy setup.

I don’t think that will help. If multiple people have access to the device, they will have the iOS passcode/faceid to unlock it.

You’d need an app that requires a pin or password that isn’t linked to face/touch I’d.

That said, signal or WhatsApp could work as long as the pin is required to be typed in each time.

But, IMHO, seems like your “friend” should get his own device.

I just checked WhatsApp and Signal. Both have screen locks, BUT both are tied to the iOS passcode and optionally Face/Touch Id.

So this won’t work.

lol!!! I really is for a friend. We sometimes text about things that his wife might not approve of and I share photos of woman I'm dating or good pics I come across online. Before he set up the iPad, I made sure he knew everything he sees on his phone would also be seen on the iPad. Especially when his wife is using it while he's working. I can't even text him suggestions because she might see it.

I didn't even have joint bank accounts when I was married. :)

Maybe your friend could use parental locks to control app access to solve the Touch ID lock problem?

WhatsApp can‘t be used properly on iPad though.

How about turning off iMessage on iPad? That way messages won‘t show up (assuming you use iMessage). Or change the Apple ID that‘s logged onto the device... make a new one and add it to family sharing to share your purchases over.

Having a shared Apple ID adds way more woes than messaging... shared photos etc are also in the mix. It‘s honestly about time that Apple adds multi-user support to iPad (for everyone, not just schools & enterprise)...

This doesn’t sound fishy at all... wow.

am I the only one that while driving, get a text, and just have my wife read it to me? I even have her reply for me at times.
and yes, my friends send me photos of women.

Nope, not the only one. If I have to hide something from my wife, then whatever it is I’m hiding is most likely morally wrong and I shouldn’t be doing it. We share a LastPass account and all our passwords and PINs are in there. I can go into her phone at anytime and she can mine, but I don’t ever feel the need to. But hey, everyone’s circumstances are different.

download ‘SnowHaze’ web browser on the iPad. It allows for an independent passcode. He can use that to log into WhatsApp. This has the added benefits of opening any link you may send him also within the browser, therefore keeping it all within the little private ecosystem. It’s also a very secure and open source browser so has multiple benefits, especially for little secrets.

I've sent him a few things through Facebook. He's not sleeping in his car so I guess his wife hasn't seen them. Not that he's doing anything wrong, just guy talk and photos of attractive woman. Not a big deal to some women but his wife would say "Why is he sending you that!?".
