I was thinking of just using some sort of bike cable lock and wrapping it around the handle. Does anyone have a better DIY solution?

In the accessories and kit section of the tech specs page, Apple mentions that Belkin will have a security kit.

The handle is attached the the outer case so looping through it doesn't really stop much. You have attached the cable to something that comes off the machine. The space frame bars protruding up on the front/back can be used as handles. (if cross in a tight loop over the top so case handle doesn't work or stop the lift away portion of the case top from clearing the cables.

If there is enough slack in the cable though can just work way around that though.

Some bar the secured to both space frame 'handles' either horizontally across the top or diagonal (if wanted to lock down case handle ) would work but would need to be custom fit.

(not sure what Belkin has lined up. )

I meant the handle that's part of the frame.

But good to know belkin is coming out with a security kit. Looks like I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see what that is.

Just out of curiosity, why would you need security cable for a desktop? Perhaps for dorm?

i just caught a couple of people tried to get into my place by breaking the screen of a bedroom's window recently. since i'm not going to be moving the mac pro around a lot, might make sense to just hook it up to a table or something that can't easily be removed.

Might want to pick it up at your local Apple Store instead of having it delivered to your home in broad daylight with the entire neighborhood knowing about it...??

put it in a trash bag before you carry it in?
Just wrap it with a quilt or trash bag or whatever.
"I wonder what that big square thing covered in a black trash bag that he is carrying on Mac Pro release day"

Late at night amigo
I'm not leaving it in my car until the sun goes down.

Regardless, it's not the neighborhood, it's people that drive by to look for any empty drive ways. I saw the truck pass by once, and pass by a second time to make sure no one was home before they tried getting in.

I understand being careful after an attempted break-in. And being paranoid at that point is justifiable.

But how many thieves know about Mac Pro release day? And if that's a genuine concern for some reason I don't understand, wait a couple of days so that it won't be release day.

Alternatively, cover it with something misleading. For example this Ikea bag, so they will think you are getting cheap crappy lamps or whatever.

Or roll it up in a carpet so people think you are moving a carpet (or a dead body, which also works).

I mean, I never mentioned that people would know about a Mac Pro in my house. I'm only worried that someone might break in for other reasons and THEN discover a Mac Pro.

....

Perhaps info overload but I'm not seeing how this thing works.

HMUH2_AV2

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/HMUH2ZM/A/belkin-lock-adapter-for-mac-pro

The description is that this screws into the back of the Mac Pro with two Phillips screws.
"... The adapter mounts to the back of your Mac Pro with Phillips-head screws and does not modify or damage it. .."

So this is clamped on with two screws on the outside of the case? Limited set of pictures of the back I'm not grokking the attachment point. Presumably it is the stationary part of the back and the clamp keeps the case the sliding up.

right. it looks like this isn't what I'm looking for.

"Belkin Lock Adapter for Mac Pro secures the housing to the enclosure, preventing access to internal components."

it just protects the inside, but not the whole unit from being stolen.

You need a loop through the eyelet provided. That isn't in the kit.

".. The Belkin Lock Adapter for Mac Pro lets you use a third-party cable or lock (sold separately) to keep your Mac Pro physically secure. "

the 3rd party cable and also probably be looped to something else that is immobile. Or interlocking cables.

There two problems. One is popping the case open and walking away with $5K GPU card. (that is worth more than most computers all by itself). Second is keeping the whole system secured. Need something to do both at the same time.

the cables entwined on the top to stop the case lifting can probably do that just more overly and visible. If it really a "this is too much drama to deal with" vibe going for that is much easier to see by an intruder. I think Apple is looking for a less "look at me" solution.
