Hi folks,

I don't known wether this topic belongs to macbook pro or mac OS.
Furthermore I'm not a native speaker, so please be patient with english skills.

Back to topic:
I have a brand new Macbook Pro 16" since monday. First I did a complete clean install from recovery console and started to configure my device and move my data. First I thougt it's normal for the macbook to be slow in some actions, because its fresh and there are tasks like spotlight in the background. But a short week and several hours of runtime later, the problem still exists...

When I opened the settings and click on "security" it takes very long to open it (11 seconds).
When I click on the "Lock-icon" to unlock the settings it takes another 10 seconds to the password prompt, at the same time my watch is vibrating and TouchID comes up to commit this change. After commiting via watch/touchID/Password the system is kind of glitchy and takes another 10-15 seconds to "authenticate" and letting me do the changes.
The same behaviour I see with "Users & Groups".

In this moment the processes "localAuthenticationRemoteService" and "com.apple.preferences.security.remoteservice" are busy.
Maybe there is a problem and the system is waiting for TouchID or is contacting my apple watch, I don't know. Looks suspicious.
Every time I have to enter a password or commit s.th. with touchID the system gets a but sluggish, glitchy and slow. Sometimes the Beachball enters the game  Looks like the biometrical authentication isn't very responsible, because the listed processes maybe point to: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/localauthentication

Does anybody else has this behaviour? My late 2013 (not having touchID) opens the settings within a seconde, same with password prompt. This machine is still on mojave, maybe not the worst decision. But coming to a new machine, I cannot choose...

Support is investigating but just offers voodoo-stuff like deleting caches and stuff or start a new spotlight indexing...

With a new testuser it's a bit different, I didn't configure TouchID and appleWach. It still takes a lot of time while opening "Security" but it's a lot faster with showing the password prompt.

Any suggestions or help?

Regards,

Joe!

When I click security & privacy pane in system preferences, there are several seconds delay. In addition, when I unlock padlock icon to change settings locked, I am experiencing the similar delay. It’s so annoying me. Is there any way to fix it?

Can you guys measure the time for me?
Seconds between clicking on "Security" and MacOS showing the security-window. (11 seconds on my machine)
And the seconds between clicking on the lock-icon to unlock the settings and the shown password prompt? (12-15 seconds on my machine)

That is what I experienced too with my MBP 15 (late 2019) model with the best specs (i9-9980HK/Vega Pro 20/4TB SSD) and I thought that was how it is supposed to be since I am new to Mac but when I downgraded to macOS Mojave everything was instant. If I clicked on the lock icon in security settings or anything which required authentication, I would see the Touch Bar pointing for me to swipe my finger and it works instantly when I do.

Fast forward to today where I replaced my MBP 15 with the latest MBP 16, that issues is still present but a *big* faster. Still very annoying though for such a fast and expensive computer. I hoped that macOS Catalina 10.15.2 would fix this but nope. It's a bug not just you.

Did you make sure to turn off Analytics and sharing data with Apple and App Developers? I have all that switched off and now it only takes about 1.5 seconds for the security prompt to swipe my finger to pop up on the Touch Bar

Never read about that. Is there more information about this issue? I will try that tomorrow, thanks for the advice!

I suspect there is some settings that's causing your problems. For me opening the "security" tab is pretty much instant (less than 1 sec.), and unlocking with my Apple Watch is even faster.

Apple watch isn't involved in this new installation, to prevent being the problem.
So, I turned of shared analytics with apple in settings->security->privacy (last tab).
Also I did a restart after that, nothing changed :( Still bad. 11 seconds and if you press any key, the beachball appears... Machine is not resonsible in the 11 seconds to open security and another 15 seconds to show password promt and another 10-15 seconds for accepting, proofing and "authenticating"...

I have the same problem. The same delay happens in the following pane as well.
- Setting up Touch ID
- User and group setting

Turning off shared analytics with apple, developers didn't work.

I noticed the same issue on my unit as well; was not present on a different 16” unit I had either.

Hi, everyone.
I have just re-installed 10.15.2 in Internet recovery mode- Shift option command R. And the delay disappeared. It took so long time to do it but it pays to challenge it!

That didn‘t solve the problem for me. Still with naked macOS there is this awfull delay... but I used command+R to reinstall. Is there a big sifference to yours?
Any other suggestions?

Edit:
I just did a new installation using „Shift option command R“. Nothing changed...
I think this machine is going home next week. I‘m not in the mood to invest more time and try some more stuff to get it work right. It‘s brand new should have been tested already...

Edit 2:
Even if I disable all icloud-options, analytics & share, gps, find my mac etc.
still there...

Ok, one step further...
If I add another admin-user (test) without using icloud, touchID or anything, the problem gets slightly better on this new user.
If I then delete the my old user and reboot the system everthing works perfect, no waiting times, no lag, everthing is instant open.
Then I added again a new user with my icloud-credentials. Still no problem. Then I activate TouchID, all icloud-services, analytics and data-share and apple watch actions, too. Still everything perfect.
Then I delete the testuser. Now everthing is fine... strange.

I‘m trying now a new fresh-installation and figure out if it is the touchID or icloud-options I take during the installation.

Ok, Problem solved.
Looks like it's located in configuration-process at the end of the installation.
If I don't configure TouchID, Analyse&Data-share, Siri and Screentime and the light theme overthink works fine. Maybe touchID-configuration has to do with that. Also I turned off my Apple Watch while installation/configuration...
Sounds like voodoo... Sorry, but that worked...

You might be right.
Here are my installation histories.

1) cmd+r, install, iCloud login in configuration stage, set Touch ID ==> delay
2) option+command+r, install, iCloud login in configuration stage, set Touch ID ==> delay
3) Shift+option+command+r, install, not iCloud login in configuration stage, set Touch ID ==> no delay

I think "not to login iCloud in the first configuration stage" is the solution for me.

For me it worked "with" iCloud login, but I skipped the TouchID-configuration...

/Edit: Sometimes it takes a seconds or a bit longer, maybe too long, but a big improvement!

For me it still takes about 3 sec from when I press e.g. the lock in System Preferences for the window with the password to come up, and another 2-3 seconds from when I press Enter after putting the password, even with Touch ID disabled.

And with Touch ID, even a bit more! A bit annoying. On all our other Macs, it's super fast. Will try the reinstall soon.

What maybe will work is to create a new user. First without icloud and touchid. Then delete the old user. After deleting my old user the problem was gone. After that i was able to activate both without an delay...
I still wantes to reinstall... so reinstall without icloud and touchid should work.

i tried to tell apple support about that problem, but they got mad like „if you know everything, why do you call“ and ended the call.

Just wanted to let you know that I had the same issue with a new MacBook Pro, and 3 hours with Apple support did nothing to fix it. They actually claimed this probably was normal behaviour at the end.

Below solved it for me.

option+command+r, install, and no iCloud login or Touch ID set in configuration stage.
0 delay after above procedure.
