Why doesn't apple provide a setting to allow you to require a passcode to turn off iOS device?

Any thoughts on this?

It would prevent a thief from turning off a device to get around FIND MY IPHONE

Sure , they can't do anything with it , without your iTunes passcode, but at least it would give you Or authorities more time possibly many hours to locate/track the device.

Because the device can still be forced to shut down by holding down the power + home buttons. And if this was removed then you couldn't hard reset your device which can be pretty useful.

Require passcode , Touch ID, Face ID to restart/reset. Make it an optional setting.

A hard reset is not the same as shutting down your device then turning it back on.

What would you do if your phone froze up and wouldn't respond to any input onscreen or buttons (faceid or touchid included) and you really had to make a call? Wait until the battery ran out?
All devices have a combination of button presses to force a shut down for situations like this. It would not be a good idea to not have this on any device or you would be stuck with a bricked device if something went wrong and it glitched and froze. So even if Apple implemented a "require passcode/TouchID/FaceID to enable slide to power off", anybody could hard shut down by holding down some buttons, defeating the purpose.

If I recall correctly, seem to recall all kinds of "why doesn't Apple..." threads re: TouchID not being secure. Lots of what if theories: steal a phone from someone while they are using on the street, immediately put into Airplane Mode, put into a Farrady bag. And so forth.

Somewhat crackpot, but, some merit. Phone gets stolen, Farrady bags are a way to isolate. Let the phone run down to 0% will power it off. Add in PD not thinking stolen phons is a top priority for cases, not a lot of upside to add extra step for majority of people to power off their phone.

But, occasionally, cops will chase down phones. Acquiantance of mine found a smartphone, I'm assuming he was going to ask for a reward from person for finding it (he's a real d-bag), left a concert venue later in the evening and cops were there waiting for him: left it on the whole time.

From my understanding, your device is attached to your iCloud account. Even if I remove the SIM card and was able to use 3rd party software to reset the device as new, I won’t able to use it and set it up as new with my own iCloud account. As the serial number and or imei number is attached to your iCloud account.


Let them steal it, it’s a brick at the end of the day.
At the end of the day, don’t put your self in to a position where your device will get stolen.

It will only reboot if you keep the butttons pressed. Hold them down until the screen goes off and let go of the buttons. Like taking the battery out. It will stay off. Try it.

Yeah shutdown was the wrong word, sorry not a native english speaker. I meant it will force turn off. Like pulling the plug on a desktop computer will.

Would you leave $800 in cash unattended. So why would you leave your phone unattended and get it stolen??
Do you want Federal Government to track every Bill and every coin you lost or if it was stolen by having a tracking device inside the currency??
How about taking responsibility and taking steps by preventing theft?

Why bother having find my iPhone in the first place then? Why bother having a passcode on device? Like this is a perfect world where stuff never happens? Things do get misplaced and sometimes robbed at gunpoint. I guess contingencies mean nothing to you.
