Hello,

Has anyone noticed any performance or slowdown issues after installing Security Update 2018-001?
I haven't installed the update yet on my iMac Late 2013 with a Haswell Intel Core i5 processor and want to know of any performance or slowdown problems before I install it.

Thanks.

Got worse on my late 2014 5k iMac in Adobe Lightroom at least. I mentioned this on another thread and a poster suggested waiting a day or so before concluding it was really a slowdown . . . I've waited, it is.

I spent my usual daily hour or so in LR today and it was frustrating.

I'm unhappy about it because the way forward isn't clear to me (yet). I mean -- go iMac Pro so that the increased speed makes up for it and the new machine "feels" the way the old one did, or better? Or just wait for a new generation of silicon.

LightRoom makes that many syscalls? Color me surprised. Wouldn't have expected that.

I'm working with 50 mb RAW files. Applying lens corrections (which used to be almost instantaneous) can take 2-3 seconds per image, something like sliding the Shadows slider, adjusting Saturation, will trigger Adobe's spinning wheel. It's not so much that it adds time to my tasks, but that it destroys what used to be a fluid interaction with LR. Making adjustments and watching them happen as I slide the sliders is gone, and that's very hard on me. Slide . . . wait . . . no, too far, so slide back . . . wait. I doubt that in a hour these lags add more than 2 or 3 minutes. But the user experience sucks now. Maybe there's something I can do about it, besides getting used to it.

Which will be years.

Well, we can hope: https://www.pcworld.com/article/325...licon-raises-more-questions-than-answers.html

Word up :( Opened LR yesterday out of the blue, processed 1000ish (25mb) RAWs twice or so and the ting ( 5k RX580 7700k 16Gb working from the SSD to RAID1/0's) was never this sluggish before... albeit handling the temps fine at 600-800 percent CPU, it really seemed to be holding back somehow from a month ago..

Was so tired from a night out that I didn't question it at first in regards to the patches etc, then saw this

I'm not really seeing any slowdown that I could put my finger on. I'm running LR 6.14 on the same machine as you. I repeated an export that I had done recently prior to the update, time was almost identical. Likewise a Handbrake encode, no change in time to encode. My files aren't as large as yours, however.

Update: I found a thread at Ars Technica. Geekbench scores were about 1% slower after the update, Blackmagic disk scores were -1% read and -3% write.

Not sure what it was, only know it was hanging somewhere - I'll be testing SSD->SSD later to see what's up.. thought it could be the saturated PCIe lanes & prioritization affecting write speeds ?

If only LR is affect, then it doesn’t sounds like the M&S security fix causing the performance degradation but something else (may be GPU driver, may be other updates, but inside the same system update package).

If that’s due to the security patch greatly reduce the speculative execution performance, that effect should be much more noticeable, but not only happening in LR.

I didn’t use LR for a while already, so can’t tell the difference now, but may try it a bit later to see if my Mac also painfully slow when using it (in 10.13.3). LR 6 was quite smooth on my machine since it was launched.

However, at the moment, I can’t see any performace degradation in general on my Mac. All video editing, ecoding, gaming, benchmarking are more or less the same.

I am with the old Xeon, so, should be affected more than any newer i7. In 10.13.2, that quickly released security patch seems slow down my ~9 years old Mac for about 5-10% in benchmarks, but still can’t quite feel the difference in daily usage. The 10.13.3 update actually bring the performance back to normal level (IMO, 1% difference is within the normal measuring error in any wildly used benchmarking software.

So, i personally tends to say that the relative security patch didn’t actually cause any noticeable performance degradation.

I just test Classic LR 7.1.0 on my Mac, there is no slow down, the picture react to the sliding bar instantaneously. So, it's confirmed not LR specifically affected by the security patch, but something else slow it down significantly. my 1st guess would be GPU driver.

Not sure what happened. It locked up my machine and would not allow a reboot. I had to do a complete recovery from time machine to get it back to operational. Now me an Security Update 2018-001 are having a menacing stare contest across the room from each other.

Security Update 2018-001 and Security Update 2018-002 were forced installed on my iMac Late 2013 without my knowledge after I noticed my iMac was up and running from sleep with an image on the screen similar to this one but thankfully I have NOT notice any performance or slowdown issues at all.
