Security Update with Firmware Update?

Just did the 2016-003 security update and I'm pretty sure it also did a firmware update of some sort. After the screen went black to reboot there was a loud beep followed by an odd reboot screen (wrong resolution) followed by several other restarts. After it was done, things seemed to be in an odd state (not unusual for Apple these days) so I rebooted. After the reboot I found that I had been booted into my backup disk image rather than the one on my main disk! I reset the startup disk to the main disk, and the reboot worked correctly this time.

QC, we don't need no steekin' QC. (New catch-phrase, replacing "It just works.")

Also, it would be nice if they'd alert you when an update was more than just a software update.

@jasnw - Agree completely. Had the exact same problem with slightly different symptoms with the Security Update 2016-003 El Capitan on my iMac. The install of this update and concurrent iTunes and Safari updates completed with without errors. Other folks were not so lucky as we were my friend

I too noticed the characteristic PRAM update screen and beep during restart, but didn't give it a lot of thought beyond wondering why on earth the PRAM would be updated without any warning. I powered off and went to bed.

Yesterday when I powered up, the boot never reached the loading screen and the iMac simply powered off.

So I booted into safe mode, ran disk repair, no errors found. Tried restart, no joy. Booted into Startup Manager, selected recovery disk, no joy, the iMac simply powered off again. Booted into Startup Manager once again and selected the default disk. Voila, good boot! So I figured default boot disk setting was hosed in PRAM. So like you, I opened System Preferences | Startup Disk, selected the default disk, closed System preferences, and restarted. Good boot! Powered off. Powered on, again good boot! I hope this thread helps someone...
