Switched to Mac recently. Lovely.

Want to consign my XP machine to history, but have it on the network for old files and maybe even storage

Have installed Bonjour for Windows, and can see my Mac drive on the PC, but can't get into my PC from the Mac

In Finder, I can see something with a typically ugly name "OWNER-R6E..." etc. but when I try to connect, it asks for ""SMB/CIFS file system authentication", with a workgroup and name I'm not aware of setting up on the PC (or Mac for that matter)

Is this a case of finding out password/domain info from the PC? In which case, help!

Or is it some windows firewall thing, or am I deluded in that my ambitions are not doable?

Make sure you do everything in this article.

You need to know the workgroup you setup for your PC, your username, and your password for your PC. That's the information you're needing to login to your PC.

To set the Workgroup on your XP machine:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.

2. Click See basic information about your computer.

3. Click the Computer Name tab, type a description of the computer (optional), and then click OK.

4. To define the computer name and the workgroup, click Change on the Computer Name tab, and then click OK.

5.Click OK, click OK again, and then restart your computer.

I have to access my computer upstairs (for like music and that) this way:
smb://ipaddress
example:
smb://192.168.33.1
when using Finder's Command + K - Connect to command.
