Seeing the auto-rotation-lock switch on the iPad....

Is that why Steve Jobs did not give the feature to the iPhone and iPod Touch--that, he didn't want another switch or button on his precious iPhone?

Not to make excuses for Apple but I imagine a rotation lock is more needed for something like the iPad. Also, the homescreen on the iPad can be put into landscape, which makes a hardware switch better than a software option. On the iPhone I would prefer a software button to toggle the rotation lock.

That's a good point. A software toggle would be a lot better on an iPhone (and less physical buttons to worry about being damaged)

I imagine a rotation lock is more needed for something like the iPad.

Also, a dedicated mute button is less needed for something that doesn't get phone calls.

(I'm not saying it's never useful, just that it's needed less on an iPad than on an iPhone.)
