Seeking advise for macpro

Hi,

I am intending to purchase macpro after my mac pro 2007 finally died on me.

I am contemplating whether i should go with One 3.33GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon processor or Two 3.06GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon.

My primary usage is as followed.

1) Running of VMware (Linux OS) to run Crystal reports
2) Running of VMWare (WinXP) to perform batch jobs processing on MS Access.
3) Email, MS Office, Skype, BT

I do have the intention to buy iMac. But i am not comfortable with the all in one build in hardware which i have to bring in everything should there be any hardware failure. Hence i decided to give it a pass.

Wouldn't be a regular server with ESXi a better choice ? More flexible & more power.
Still you can use the Mac for other stuff. But the VMs I would put on a different box.

I thought so as well. However, i am the only person using it. That is why i didn't opt for a server.

I just bought the 12-core 3.06 and use it extensively with VMware Fusion, and it works excellent. I think you would get perfectly adequate performance if you are running only two or three VMs with the six core. If you are running several VMs allocating several cores to each with heavy applications, the 12-core would be better.

You could allocate two cores to each of your VMs, and still have two left over for OS X and I think get great performance on the overall system. If you want power to spare, go with the 12-core.

At this point, if money is not an issue get the 12 core! With that said, a 3.33GHz 6 core should do just fine for your needs.
