I’ve been trying to learn which affordable iMac would be best to run world of Warcraft classic, but there’s so much conflicting stuff with the graphics cards on iMacs and which older ones can run metal, and I’m just in over my head. I’ve read that any iMac 2012 and later can upgrade to Mojave, but a lot of the ones for sale run High Sierra. If it’s free to upgrade why are they mostly running High Sierra? I asked this on another forum and got banned so I’m crossing my fingers here. Thanks for any advice you could give me.

I’ll assume you didn’t get banned ‘just’ for asking this same question...

Maybe the sellers have simply reinstalled the OS that came with the iMac, so that you have the choice whether to upgrade or not.

I’d stay away from any iMac with a spinning HDD running anything later than High Sierra, as Apple effectively crippled them with the move to APFS format for boot drives.

As to what GPU you need for WoW, I’ve no idea. Obviously, the newer & faster the iMac is the better chance you’ll have of playing it.

ETA: WoW Classic recommended Mac system includes:
  • MacOS 10.13 or later
  • Intel® Core™ i7-4770 or better
  • AMD Radeon™ R9 M395X or better, 4GB VRAM, Metal-capable GPU
  • 8GB RAM
So if you really want that GPU spec you’re looking for an 2015 i5/i7 27” 5K iMac that had that upgraded GPU added as an option when it was built.
