With Lion's release, apple for me will have completed a full developmental circle, taking a limited but very capable tiger, and making it into leopard, a great and advanced os, then going to snow leopard for an interim release that solidified the capacities of leopard, and now to Lion which is without any doubt the best os this world has ever seen.

I don't care that much about UI elements, although apple is making a lot of interesting modifications and additions.

But I am very excited that core os functionalities, are being rethought, and paradigms that hadn't changed for decades are shifting.

Case in point, the open closed apps paradigm. What a thing of the past right? Soon it will seem a distant memory how we used to have open and closed apps. Now the system itself manages resources, so you don't have to.

Better over the cloud connection, file management and syncing...it's been a constant request of mine, but I am glad they took a bit longer because they are rethinking this from the ground up (as they should) with airdrop, and not merely offering patches. Very excited to see how this goes.

And there are also evolutionary changes, that I won't go into here, but full disk encryption, (finally) some sort of resolution independence, etc. etc.

And summer is just around the corner. Good times!

Lion makes Windows7 look like it's something from the stone age.

The fluidity and all the features in Lion: there's really nothing out there to compete with.

Ps: SnowLeopard to me is already the world's best OS. I use both on a daily basis, OS-X and Win7 and it's really night and day and i'm not even a typical Apple fanboy. I also like Ubuntu and it's better than Win7 IMO but the lack of pro software is probably it's bottleneck.

I use both every day and I find things in snow leopard that really annoy me. Like cut and paste. sometimes you can right click and choose sometimes you can't. the x button does not do anything it's the same the minus button on most apps.
I have had to reinstall leopard though I found making a new account works better sooner then I have had to reinstall win 7.
There are other things. overall osx may be better but it has things that are really annoying too.
I man I can't even use the eject button on my external dvd drive.

I agree, Lion is already looking like a great update. I think we will see even more in the coming months though. They will take in a lot of user feedback and refine the OS with future builds. On top of that, Apple is notorious for hiding some of the most impressive features of new software for the "grand unveiling" to the public. For example FaceTime in iOS 4. Even though the 4.0 beta has been open to developers for months, it FT wasn't shown until WWDC right before the public release.

Like FaceTime however, we do get clues. People digging through the beta code turn up clues that foreshadow their plans. In this case we've already seen hints of push notifications, free back to my mac, and maybe even resolution independence. I think the real surprises will come in the next few months as Apple starts to unveil their plans for iOS 5 and the MobileMe refresh. Maybe even this Wednesday at the iPad event. I think we will see some big things.

I think that Lion will be the greatest update for Mac OS X. Apple has done some pretty cool things with it. The new features are really great and the OS shows an attention to detail that is really amazing. Lion is an evolutionary update but it is so much better than Snow Leopard. I really cannot wait!

I wasn't aware that operating systems were one size fits all. Maybe Lion is without doubt the best OS for the thread starter, but for me, there are still things I need Windows and Linux for.

These kind of threads do nothing but generate tons of hyperbole and flame wars. You use the OS that works best for you for each specific task. In some cases, that might be Mac OS X. Or Windows. Or Linux. Or Amiga. Or Solaris. Or MS-DOS. I think you get my point.

Actually there are plenty of valid reasons to prefer Windows to Mac OS X but I can already tell you won't bother to listen to valid ones because you're too biased to favor anything that doesn't come out of Cupertino.

As someone who's used Windows since 3.1, and who switched to the Mac in 2000, even using Windows 7 feels "past it".

There is more in Windows 7 that's influenced by OS X than vice versa.

I will never buy or build a PC again, because Windows cannot hold a candle to OS X in my opinion. It's a far more stable and feature packed OS.

Really? Can you argue in favor of OSX in real terms, and not things like "it looks nicer" or "Windows has the virii!"

Because there are a lot of solid reasons to prefer Windows.

Most people who rant about how awesome OSX is, do so purely on aesthetic grounds, whether they realize it or not.

Why would someone prefer a 1960s muscle car over a 2000s sports car?

Why might someone prefer the original Playstation to the Xbox?

Why might one value a wooden toy from 50 years ago when they could have a modern electronic one?

There is no definite answer as to why someone would prefer Windows to Mac OS X. Every person is different and has different reasons. Maybe they prefer how Windows looks. Maybe they prefer how it works. Maybe software they rely on every single day only runs on Windows. Just because you think Mac OS X is better than Windows doesn't make it fact.

I use Mac OS X and Windows 7 every single day. Both are incredible operating systems and both work wonderfully at the tasks I need them to perform. There are things Mac OS X does I wish Windows 7 would do, and vice versa.

OS X is more stable than Windows, and it's not down to me using "crap" machines. My Father in Law, prior to me giving him an iMac, bought a brand new Packard Bell with Vista installed. It locked up during set up and locked up while connecting an external hard drive.

On Snow Leopard especially, I've never had my Mac lock up on me. Sure, on my iMac G5 I experienced the occasional Kernal Panic, but never have I had moments of sheer frustration as the system locks up or completely crashes (blue screen).

I use Windows every day in work, and it is truly painful. It's XP, and the programs we're forced to use daily make coming home to the Mac a pleasure.

And spare me the argument based on aesthetics. I don't like Macs because "it looks nice", I like the Mac because OS X has features which are actually useful. Time Machine, for example, is a simple back up system that encourages you to back up. As someone who never did, and paid the price, it's nice to have.

Spaces, Expose, and soon Mission Control and Launchpad on Lion, just make navigating and using the Mac a far more pleasant experience. On OS X, the computer works for you, but on Windows I've always felt like the computer was working against you.

Yes, I quoted you, but my comment wasn't so much directed at you specifically as it was to others in general. It just seems that "Mac OS X is more stable" gets thrown around a lot, without any sort of actual evident to back it up.

So often I see other message boards where "it just works" is honestly the #1 reason people post as to why Mac OS X is supposedly better. Or they throw other lines from Apple's advertising, such as "it can't crash" or "you can even run Windows on it."

Besides, what does "stability" even really mean? It's obviously more stable than Windows for you because it's never crashed, and that's great. But people (not you, I mean people who have no sources, no anecdotes, nothing) who just throw that word around without ever any shred of proof only contribute further to the whole "arrogant Mac user" stereotype.

That's true. If one was to bring up Windows 98, then it should be compared to the "classic" Mac OS, as that would have been the contemporary of the time.

Any version of Windows built on the NT platform works as a much better comparison with Mac OS X.

As I said, I was commenting based on personal experience. And yes, while I do openly admit a preference for Apple products, I will criticise when necessary.

In my personal experience, and again I am well aware that doesn't speak for every single Mac user, I have had far less problems with OS X than I have with Windows.

However, my main reason for preferring OS X is that it makes using the computer more practical. Throwing accusations around that Mac users cite aesthetics as a reason why OS X is better, is wide of the mark. Yes, Apple do make features in OS X a little "flashy", but they work. Spaces, Expose, Time Machine, Stacks, just make the computer I use day to day far more practical.

And yes, I know that you can download third party applications for Windows which replicate the features I mentioned (and backing up may not be considered a "feature", but Time Machine does promote backing up better than anything I've used before).

I just utterly loathe that the second someone comes on here and tries to post an opinion, whether it's about the Mac, OS X, or the iOS devices, there's a user waiting in the wings to read things their own way and go off one one, almost desperate to "prove" something to the forum.

As I said, I don't come here to play FanboiWars, and I certainly don't expect to be told what I can and cannot say when it comes to personal experience.
