Hi,

I am debating whether I should sell my current MacMini 1.83GHz, 1GB, 80GB, Combo for a new one. The exact options are selling it for a new one and upgrading the RAM to 4 gig or keeping mine in which case I would put a bigger harddrive in it and install 4 gig RAM (I know - only 3.something usable). I just personally do not think the new one is that much better - is it?
And how much would you think I still get for mine?

Thanks,
Thingsis

I would say sell it if you can get a good price on it otherwise just keep it and do some upgrades.

The new one is not THAT much faster, but do have a much better graphic performance from the 9400M

If what you do with it is not graphically intensive .. not a huge diff.

Hi,

thanks for the reply. I was just thinking that when upgrading the harddrive in the old one shouldn't a 7200 rpm one give it another speed boost? HD Speed is probably more of a bottle neck than the CPU or GPU.

If I keep it I would do that for sure. The limit is 3.3 gig or something when putting 4 gig in it - even though apple says the limit is 2 gig. Can somebody confirm this?

Thanks

thingsis, we have the same mini and MB. You might consider the same upgrade I have planned. I upgraded my Macbook to 4 gb ram and 250 gb hdd. When my warranty is up on the mini, I'll put the 2 gb ram kit and the 160 gb hdd in the mini. The extra hdd is already loaded with leopard and my media.

Hi,

thanks for all the replies. I guess what I will do is put a 4 GB RAM Kit in there to have 3 GB dual-channel. As a harddrive I am thinking about the Samsung HM251JJ 250 GB SpinPoint MP2. I hope it will not run too hot - but it should be fine.

Hmm,

I just read that the Samsung HD is not supposed to be that good. Maybe I should get the Seagate one instead. Anyway, still haven't totally decided yet...

Mac mini 2nd G, 2.16GHZ, 2GB RAM Vs Mac mini 3rd G, 2.00GHZ, 4GB RAM

I have compared my old 2.16GHz C2D mini (upgraded processor from 1,66CD) with 2GB RAM, to my new 2.00GHz C2D mini with 4GB RAM and nVidia card. Check out the times for those two machines when they are both set up with exactly the same configuration using the time machine. I think this will be helpful for your decision:

Thanks for taking the time, a little helpful but not incredibly. The main draw of the new Mini is the updated graphics and the speed at which you can do graphic intensive stuff, where the new machine should be approx 4x faster.

Doesn't that one have an even worse chipset than the real C2D? I guess it would be slower than a Mac Mini from a couple of weeks ago. Of course, graphics performance will be better - but except for gaming do I really use it - no! People who do will want to upgrade for sure. Even software like photoshop would not benefit from the new graphics performance - at least not much. Anyway, back to my decision: Should I upgrade the old one or sell it and get the new one? Still haven't decided

The only difference on the chipset between my old mini and the mini from a couple of weeks ago is the maximum of memory utilization. Intel Mac minis up to mid 2007 can utilize up to 2GB RAM, while latest old minis can utilize up to 3.2GB of RAM. All the rest in performance is the same (system bus, memory bus, memory technology DDR2). I don’t really think there is much difference between those two machines, but there is notable difference between those and the new mini.

My opinion is if you can sell your old mini for a good price, then go and buy the new mini. Even better, keep also the old mini and use it as HTPC in your living room. If you are limited in budget, then keep it but upgrade the memory, which makes huge difference in overall performance.

I agree - eventually it all comes down to good ol budget. How much do you guys think I would still get for my 'old' Mac Mini? Looking on ebay only helps a bit as most of them were sold when they were still up to date. Doesn't the new one make the price for mine drop by quite a bit?

Im thinking of doing sommat similiar

Im thinkin of making a right project outta it, going to put a C2D 2.33 (the T7600) in there, 2Gb of ram, and a faaast HD. Should be about £400 i think in total.. Then i will eventually use that as a media server/ front row etc. Eventually i will get the latest mac mini and upgrade the ram myself :)
