iPad Pro Sell 2017 12.9 IPad Pro to get 2018 IPad Pro ???

I am thinking about selling my current 12.9 iPad Pro (2017) and upgrading to the 2018 version.

Current iPad has AppleCare through the summer and is cellular / LTE. Listed it on Facebook marketplace for $675 obo. Have a pencil that I’ll offer to a buyer for an extra $50 or will sell separately.

Is it worth the upgrade to a 2018 iPad Pro? I am an attorney and use the iPad semi-regularly for client meetings, emails and research while I’m in the courtroom, and general note taking / business bookkeeping / document signing, etc.

I see lots of complaints about the lack of responsiveness, but this looks like it impacts all 12.9 Ipad models.

I can get the 2018 cellular iPads for $200 off the retail price.

What would you guys / girls recommend? Should I stick with the current 2017?

From the sounds of it, probably absolutely nothing you do requires the 2018. You don't need the performance of the 2018, nor do you need its USB-C port. If you want the 2018 anyway, that's fine, but you may be hard pressed to find a real objective reason in terms of functionality to justify the purchase.

Mind you, as an attorney, I guess it depends on how your finances are set up but can’t you just write it off?

Yes. These expenses are written off when you file taxes for the following year. But so are advertising costs, staff salaries, etc. there is certainly no shortage of things that can be used to mitigate tax liability. That really isn’t a huge incentive to upgrade, as I don’t necessarily need to generate write-offs right now. I’m more concerned with whether I should spend the extra $300-400 upgrading to the 3rd gen model based on my usage.

From your post, it doesn’t seem like a big upgrade other than the size/weight and the new charging method for the pencil.

I also upgraded from a 2017 12.9 iPad Pro to a 2018 12.9 iPad Pro. It was one of the hardest choices I’ve ever made.

Depends on the issues you have with the 2017 I would say. I just upgraded a week and a half ago, and I love it. The new models are MUCH lighter, and I really like having FACE ID on my iPad and iPhone. Makes everything so streamlined and similar. I never liked Touch ID, and it worked terribly for me.

The only debate I am currently having is if I want to exchange my 11” for the 12.9”. I had a 12.9” pro before and loved it, but at times it was a bit to much for me. Little too big while laying in bed etc. I am a big tall guy with big hands, so it wasn’t impossible for me. Just a bit of a pain.

The beauty of the new 12.9” is it is DRAMATICALLY lighter (IMO) and the bezels being mostly gone make the device much smaller. I still have a couple days to decide and I am still on the fence. 11” is a great form factor, but its not good for multitasking and me using it when I bring it to work.

All in all though, I think the 2018 models are fantastic. New pencil is SO MUCH better than first gen too.

I would say yes, do the upgrade!

The main reason is that you use your iPad on the go. Its mobile, in the courtroom, at the office, signing documents, etc. If I used it this way, I would upgrade my iPad without hesitation. The new iPad Pro is a full inch shorter, a tad narrower, thinner, and more than a tenth of a pound lighter (but keeps the same gorgeous screen). For mobile use, those improvements would make it entirely worth the upgrade cost.

personally, I keep my iPad on my desk or lap, not carrying it around much during the day... so I'm holding out and keeping my 12.9 gen 2 for now. But wow, I hate those giant bezels, always have. I'm glad the current generation finally trimmed down the bezel size and weight.

I’m using the pro 2018 12.9 and it’s a great machine. As for the freezes, after sending mine to Apple, they didn’t found anything, but upon return started to freeze again, I started to be suspicious of the magnetic cover, so I bought a non magnetic cover at Amazon and now it’s more than 2 weeks without a single freeze, so I can say definitely on my case, it was the Apple stupid cover, too many magnets...

Yeah, the Pencil 1 design for charging is just stupid.

However, the sleeve case I bought for it (which straps onto my iPad) has a tiny little compartment specifically to hold the charging adapter.

I also bought an extra adapter for $4 and just leave that at home, with a little silicone attachment to the Lightning cable on my desk so it never gets lost.

I’d say go for it. It has a few benefits over the iPad Pro 2nd gen. Nothing to drastic though, as a lot of people are just now purchasing an iPad Pro 2nd Gen model, due to the price drop. These devices have an incredibly long life cycle.

Given your current use, do YOU see a NEED for an upgrade/ change? In other words, are you running into any operational issues? If yes, then if the newer model addresses those, the. The decision is an easy one. If not, unless there are other factors at play, then why do it? Why not wait for a bit to see how iOS 13 evolves and what a new generation of iPads bring to the table (probably a year or so away).

The thing to attach the adapter works well. The cap for the tip works well enough too. However, the thing to attach the cap of the charging plug is too loose to be of any use.

As about unresponsiveness it’s hit or miss for any iPad from modern Apple. If you’re lucky you’ll be good. If you’re not lucky you will have the same non-working touch on the 2018 iPad and if you’re really not lucky (like me) you will have the same problem after warranty replacement.

Well - I just sold my 10.5 and got an 11-inch. There are some annoyances with these new devices such as usb-C and no headphone jack. But the hardware is lovely.

I picked up a Best Buy open box in perfect condition for $380 off Apples pricing. I bought one when they first came out, but returned it because of the eye watering pricing of the 512GB models. At close to $400 off its much more palatable, so when someone offered me good money for my 10.5 I went for it.

Back in February I sold my iPad Pro 12.9 second generation cellular and was looking to upgrade to is the 2018 12.9 cellular through T-Mobile it now being just about three months since the third generation launched T-Mobile was still finding it hard to send customers the 256 GB 12.9 space gray models I tried twice having my order been canceled or delayed so I decided to go for the 11 inch model to give it a try being that it was in stock now being about three months after getting the 11 inch space gray 256 GB cellular model are you still use it every day with the Apple Smart Folio keyboard and the second German Apple Pencil I tried holding my dad‘s first GEN 12.9 cellular model and the weight and size was just too big I bring my 11 inch model everywhere I need it to where I think I may need it I hope that helps

I had the choice between the 10.5” and the 11” for in March. Until the iPads get proper external storage support I didn’t really see the point of spending 50% more for the 11”, esp. considering both iPad Pros have 4 GB RAM and both support USB 3 transfer speeds.

That is a very good point. I guess what I may try to do is see if I can sell the 10.5 before my return window closes for a decent price. If not, I may need to make a hard decision!

I upgraded and in my opinion, the 2018 12.9” iPad Pro is the best I’ve owned. It’s lighter, no bigger than it needs to be for the screen and is the same size as the notepad of paper I used to carry long ago. Since I travel often, it is a pleasure to have with me at all times.

I leave for China on Friday and it will be with me.
