So I've been a big non-believer in iPad, but I was just calculating my monthly expenses and this somewhat interested me.

my iPhone bill (individual) costs me a whopping $95 (without taxes and with 22% corporate discount): 900 minutes, 1500 texts, unlimited data.

I was browsing around and noticed that T-Mobile has very cheap no contract plans.

So, if I were to get T-Mobile for 1000 Minutes and unlimited Text, it would cost me $49.99 (without corporate discount) with total savings of ~$50 per month.

Wireless plan for iPad is $15 with ATT without contract.

So, I save $35 per month in total.

The iPad 3g version starts at $629. If I manage to sell my iPhone 3g White 16GB for ~ $300, I recoup the money without any contracts in 10 months (earlier if I do no ATT plan).

Considering this, I have a question. Does the iPad have a GPS chip in there? If yes then I might be considering following this plan.

Thanks,

Yes, the 3G iPad does have GPS! Good luck with your plan :).

Yes, the iPad has the same GPS as the iPhone. Also, you'll easily be able to get a lot of money for your iPhone. As long as it's in good condition. (You can unlock it and jailbreak it before you sell it for maximum profit.)

Don't ask why, but eBay goes nuts for unlocked and jailbroken iPhones. I sold my 32GB 3GS for $650 on eBay after I jailbroke it and unlocked it.

It is not a solution. Sorry to disappoint.

I do not know what you mean?

Have done the same, my guess is people are too scared or simply have no clue how to JB/Unlock so they would rather pay a premium for one already done. No risk to them to brick their new phone. Which we both know is not likely to happen, but who am I to complain? :)

Should I sell mine on ebay or craigslist?

You know, you could get a cheap cell phone + iPod Touch right now & save yourself like $50/month - that's what I have... and I know lots of people with this combination. I don't get a camera & 3G, but it really hasn't been a big deal. There are a lot of places with WiFi. I plan to get an iPad (no 3G), but it won't really replace the Touch... will just use it around the house & maybe at work or something... we'll see.

I want the GPS because I paid for the app.

I've only used CL, I have had a few issues with Ebay that i just avoid it. CL allows me to meet someone, they get to see a working device as advertised and I walk away with cash in hand. No Paypal BS to get reversed or a claim filed as they try to scam you.

Either would work though, some people have great luck with Ebay, just not my choice.

I am in the dark on this scheme on one aspect.. what do you with the AT&T contract for the 3GS? Or you do not have a contract? If so, did you pay full price for it or the subsidized price?

I guess that works, but you'd better check your network coverage before that.

I would be fine with AT&T if it would do three things:

1) Fix the coverage gaps circling my home. About a mile out going two directions, you lose all bars. After that, it's fine.

2) Quit jacking us on text messages. I could completely do without them, but try not buying at least a $5/month plan if you have any friends who are texting maniacs.

3) Enough with the lack of choice on data plans. I would bet that most of us iPhone users don't feel like we use $30 in mobile data a month. I spend $35 on a home 3.0Mbps DSL connection. I don't go nuts with data. Bring out tiered data plans.

An optional 4) would be to lower ALL phone plans. I just checked the T-Mobile plans. They start at $29.99. AT&T's start at $39.99 with fewer minutes. Same with Verizon and Sprint. If I'm talkative, I use half the minutes included every month. It would be nice for someone to throw us a $19.99 for 200 minutes bone that wasn't a frickin' prepaid plan that limits you to crap phones.
