Looking for some insight on this.

I have an M4 iPad Pro from this year, and I also have a MacBook Pro, 16 inch, with an M1 Max at 10/32 cores from 2021.

Realistically, I have not nearly utilized the computing power as much as I could. I may or may not want to get into gaming (again) at some point in the future.

Typical uses are "office-y" and related, though I always think I'm going to get into something where I'll want the extra power.

For a theoretical Mini, I already have an Apple Studio Display as well as all the peripherals I would need.

All that being said, I am debating purchasing a Mac Mini, optioned well, and trading in my MacBook Pro towards the cost, which would essentially be a 50% or more discount.

I am eligible for edu pricing, knocking off a little more.

For the occasional portability uses, I still have that iPad. I could certainly buy a keyboard for it if I needed to.

If it were you, what would you do, and why?

Appreciate the thoughts.

As long as your current computer does whatever you currently need it to do, and does it well, I would not buy a new one.

Once you have tasks that need extra power you should start doing them on your current computer and see how well they work.

And only once you are actually doing things that don't work well on the computer you already have should you look for more.

Since you already have a powerful setup with the M1 Max and an iPad for portability, a Mini might be overkill unless you’re planning to do some serious power-heavy tasks regularly.
