what do you think guys?

I've been toying with the idea of selling my G5 ( specs are in my sig ) to get a maxed out 24" iMac. In all fairness my G5 is almost overkill for my photography right now. I got a little crazy when i went and bought 6 extra gigs of ram. I think my system is better suited for someone who does video n such.

I was thinking it over, and I'd like some opinions. ( not to mention how much money it would save me )

Keep my G5 beast? or sell to get a maxed out 24" iMac?

( photoshop is my key program, just for reference )

You have to ask yourself a few questions:

1. How much do you think you'd get for the G5? You may have to part out some of the RAM to get your money back...

2. What type of display do you have right now? If you have a nice LCD you'll probably also have to sell that at a loss.

3. Do you run apps that you'll have to purchase upgrades to Universal Binaries? Or apps that are not UB yet (Photoshop)?

I'd say keep the G5. Maybe sell some of the RAM and just run with 2gb or 4gb.

Since you're still using PPC applications, I would hold until Adobe releases CS3
and even then, why bother? Your machine is working fine.

I would just keep on going and take advantage of the tax depreciation.

That machine should hold you well though 2008 at the least.

Now if you were running audio, it would be a different story.

I'd jump on a MacPro in a heart beat if I had the money.

You probably would not save that much. I say sell it now and get a imac 24" 1-2GB will be more than enough ... or even 20" if you donot need so much of screen real estate.

Go and get the 24" you won't regret :p

I just sold my iMac G5 17", unfortunatly I ordered a refub. 20" iMac 3 days ago... waiting to be delivered so I can return it and get the 24".

well i have a dell 24" 2405fpw that i would sell along with the G5 ( almost as incentive )

and i have a 23" ACD that i would keep to use with the iMac.

It also just dawned on me that my G5 has a 600w power supply where as the iMac has a 220w.

I suppose this isn't so much a necessity or anything because youre right. my g5 runs everything i would ever want it to. and it runs it all incredibly well. It's just i don't think i truly need much more than the capabilities of the 24" iMac. ( not to mention how much cooler it will run, which is a big big big deal for me )

i dunno guys. it looks like with the way ebay prices are going for my model i could pull in almost $3k+ ( thanks to the 400GB HD and 6.5GB of ram, and a included 24" display )

sure does make it tempting...

If you try and keep up with the latest technology it will make you poor fast :p Why not wait for a few upgrades then splurge? Just my thought

i'm not necessarily trying to get the latest and the greatest, Because to me what i have is far greater than anything ive ever dreamed of owning. It's just an issue of heat really. In all fairness. I live in southern california, it rarely gets cold here. my G5 normally operates at about 145-165F and has an enormous amount of power consumption. which creates a problem for me here in CA. I haven't been able to use my g5 all summer for more than like 45mins - 1Hr because of the high heat and high cost for me to run it right now.

with this imac, it draws quite a bit less power, and runs significantly cooler, which is a huge bonus for me. and i could sell one of my displays to start freeing up my desk again ;)

it's just a thought.
