I bought a 2010 mid year Mac pro 5.1 one eBay 2 days later the discription changed to 2012

Can i still go 12 core with this ..is he trying to scam me or do you think he is out of 10 and giving me a 12 instead. I cant afford a new Mac
So i rather upgrade bit at a time.

So is the 12 just as good as the 10

How do i look up the year when i get the device
Or what should I look for?

I can still return when it arrives

Thanks in advance for your help.

The 2010 and 2012 Mac Pro are the exact same machine. Just sold with different CPUs and video cards, but everything is compatible.

2010 and 2012 Mac Pros are almost exactly the same.

Mac Pros mid-2012 have faster Xeon processors and a new format of serial numbers, but they are the identical everywhere else and use the same parts as mid-2010.

Mac Pro mid-2012 have the exactly same GPUs as mid-2010, ATI HD 5770 and HD 5780.

Early-2009 have different GPUs.

make sure it's not a 2009 flashed to a 2010. The version of the smc chip is the dead give away as to the hardware revision. (1.39f5 in 2009, 1.39f11 in 2010-2012)

How to check this..? On cpu board.

Thanks again.

Just go to "About This Mac"

This is useless, if a crooked seller is selling a 2009 for a 2010/2012, he can change the SSN into the SPI flash memory and bypass the About My Mac. This is becoming common by the way and I was approached two times already to do this mod. It's the fastest way for me to block someone.

The only reliable way to determine if a backplane is 2010/2012 and not a modded 2009 is checking the SMC version in System Information / Hardware Overview / SMC Version (System).

  • 2009 is 1.39f5
  • 2010/2012 is 1.39f11
Another thing, the only way to know if a replacement backplane, no serial, is 2010 or 2012 is to read the LBSN_BD sector, to do this you need to dump the BootROM with ROMTool or flashrom, open the dump into a hex editor, go to the end of the file and check around the last bytes of the dump for the build date, it's something like 131010131010 for a 2012 backplane made in 20131010. Mid-2012 backplanes started to be made after June 2012.
