Hi,

Over a year ago, I bought an iMac and AppleCare but never registered / installed it.

I'm selling the iMac, and just making sure there won't be a problem. The purchaser can just ring up Apple and give them the serial number and it's all fine and dandy right?

I've got the "Web Registration Instructions" manual here and it seems to imply that activating it now simply prevents delay and doesn't stop you from using it.

Now, I am selling this machine... should I activate the AppleCare now, or let them do it?

you should call apple care now immediately
AppleCare must be purchased and activated within the 1 year Apple warranty. If purchased after, you will not be able to activate it. If you purchased it before, but forgort to activate it, and have proof of purchase(original receipt ), you may be able to call Apple and have it activated, but they are under no obligation to do so after your 1st year warrany had expired

I had this issue with my iMac g3. I bought from CompUSA. I called Apple, explained the issue and they honored the AppleCare. BUT, that was years ago. Apple ain't what it use to be, customer service wise.

Ah, thanks guys!

EDIT: After I register the machine (I'm sure it'll be fine), do I have to do anything else like transfer ownership or something of the AppleCare to the person I'm selling it to? Or do I just give them the AppleCare box I have and all its contents, serials, etc.

Apple.com, click the support tab and there should be a place for you to check by serial number. You can also check all registered products by your email address thru the same support area.

Do they automatically acitivate the Apple Care if you buy it at the Apple Store? I bought my MBP + Apple Care a year ago tomorrow and this is the first I've heard about activating anything.

I'm not sure if this is still the case, but people here have been referring to two types of AppleCare.

In 2008, my lass bought her macbook and she got it with applecare which was automatically applied to start at checkout, to my knowledge, this type of AppleCare could only be purchased through Apple at the point of sale. It had a different SKU name to....

The other type, the stand alone AppleCare pack which could either be bought through resellers or Apple as an add-on later. This used to also be offered on eBay for dirt cheap with codes until Apple changed their policy last year that you needed the original box.

Give Apple a call or visit an Apple Store.

If it has been over a year and the iMac is outside it's original one year warranty you may have some work to do.

You're going to need two things I believe.

1) Original iMac Purchase Receipt
2) Original Apple Care Purchase Receipt

I posed this question to Apple in the past ....

" What if I buy Apple Care for my iMac but forget to register it, and more then a year goes by? "

Their response was ....

" Bring us the receipt for the iMac and Apple Care to show that you purchased the Apple Care while the iMac warranty was in force and we can take care of that for you. "

After the registration is complete and it appears online as covered, there's nothing that you have to do. The AC is now linked to the computer and will be covered regardless of who brings it in.

Thanks everyone for your help! Tis' much appreciated.

Well, I've looked up my machine and it says it isn't covered so I'll ring up and get it sorted tomorrow morning. Hopefully all will go well.

I never manually registered my Apple Care either. I've been meaning to take care of it before I hit the one year mark. This reminded me and I checked online for my support status which says I already have Apple Care. They must have activated it at the store when I purchased both items together....

This is correct, the new owner can also call up Apple and have it transferred into their name as well.
