I am selling my Imac to purchase a new mac. Is there an easy way to backup my whole computer so when I get my new computer I can just sync it to be just like my Imac that I am selling. I have a 5g Ipod 60gb to use as a external hard drive. Thanks in advance.

How much data is on your iMac now? Will it all fit on the spare space on you iPod? I'm assuming you don't have an external drive of any sort other than the iPod.

Are you willing to spend any money on backup software, or are you hoping to just go to the iPod or DVD or whatever? If you want to spend a little money, there are a number of inexpensive but good backup solutions out there. In fact, there was recently a "I order you to take a backup" thread that could provide some insight into solutions for you.

I wouldn't worry so much about completely duplicating you settings/etc., as those can be fairly easily restored, but it may be beneficial to grab your preferences files.

Also, make sure you deauthorize your iMac (for purchased music) before selling it so that it doesn't count as one of your 5 uses.

Edit: Another thread on backups here.

1) wait until you get the new one and do a Firewire transfer between them with the migration assistant

2) Get a larger Firewire hard drive. THe iPod may be OK for backing up personal documents, but is unlikely to have enough room to back up your whole user folder and applications and everything needed to make the new one Just Like (TM) the old one.

Once you have a large Firewire external drive, you can clone your existing machine using Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper -- check versiontracker.com for sources.

I would use the Migration Assistant, but I have to sell the one I have in order to purchase the other one. I hate Credit Cards....

As amazing as it might sound, before credit cards, a lot of people actually waited to make a purchase until they had saved enough money for it. Weird . . .
