Hello all!

I am going to hopefully be selling my iMac G5 very soon and I want to put a fresh install of Tiger on it for the buyer. I want to try to make sure that when he/she opens it and turns it on, they see the welcome screen and do all the registrating that happens when you buy one new. I sold an eMac some time ago and I had a fresh install of Panther on it, and the way I did it then was I just turned the eMac off after the install was restarting. That worked, I think, but it doesn't seem like the best way to do it. Does anyone know a better way to go about this?

The way you did it is a pretty good way.

There is another way, but it's NOT optimal. You can remove /var/db/.AppleSetupDone, but when the user creates their user it won't recreate the admin user with UID 501. And sometimes this leads to a non-admin user, which leaves the purchaser out in the dust.

Just pull the plug.

There is an even better way to do this.

After re-installing tiger and restarting the mac you will first be presented with a language selection screen. Choose English (or whatever you prefer, as this setting is just temporary) then watch the intro movie. After the movie is complete it will start asking you questions to set up the computer. At this point, press Command + Q. A message box will appear giving you the option to cancel or shutdown. If you click shutdown, the next time the mac is started it will go right back to the Language selection screen - As if the computer was brand new.
