Hi there

Previously, when selling your Mac, you had to roll back to the macOS version it came with before selling it. (License restrictions.)

Is this still the case, or can I just use the 'Erase all content and settings' method in Monterey, meaning I can sell it with Monterey installed, even though that's not the original version the MBP came with?

You can only use the 'Erase all content and settings' method if you have an Apple Silicon Mac.

I think it's common/acceptable to install the most recent macOS not the original OS.

Oh? The option is there on my 2018 MBP with an Intel i7 core. I think the option is there for Macs with a T2 chip too.

Thanks for the answer, btw! :)

Oh you're right. As long as your Intel Mac has T2 + Monterey, it's available.

You don't have to do that. Just "Erase all Content and Settings" and you are set.

If your Mac is running Monterey, it has the option to erase all settings similar to iOS.

As far as reverting the OS, this is no longer a thing. (I don’t believe it ever was). I tell them what it is and if they don’t like it, then they can retract the purchase/bid.

Correct -- it was never a thing.

Well, it once was a thing, sort of. For example, if the computer came with OS 10.3 and you upgraded it to 10.4, you'd need to sell it with 10.3 if you wanted to hang onto your 10.4 DVD (e.g. to install it on a different computer).

For the App Store-supplied versions it was more murky as the purchased upgrade was linked to your account and couldn't (easily?) be transferred.

Now that the OS upgrades are effectively free, it doesn't matter if you sell it with the latest version installed.
