send a fax from osx?

Hello everyone

I have to fax a receipt to a company but don't have a fax machine. I have a scanner and cable internet though, so would it be possible to scan the receipt and send a fax from my computer (no analog modem available)? Anyone done this before?

You certainly can do this - the standard print dialogue in Tiger contains an option to send as a fax. I haven't tried it myself, but have just browsed the Apple website and it appears to be as simple as scanning in the receipt, choosing print, selecting fax and putting in the number you want to send to.

Not sure - the Apple page here isn't that clear (although I've just re-read the original post and it says cable modem).

My broadband is via a phone line, so I'm not sure how this would apply here.

If your computer has a modem that is connected to a phone line

i dont think you can send or receive faxes over dsl either.

I'll have a stab when I get home later and see what happens. I don't really have much call to fax stuff, so it's not really a problem if it doesn't work, but it would be nice to find out for sure whether it works or not.

Too expensive to just send one fax. I usually don't use fax. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

They might even let you email them the fax and pay over the phone with your CC, i think its like 1.50-2.00 a page.

Faxing is an ANALOG operation, requiring an analog fax modem and an analog phone line to send it over

So can't you just plug a regular phone cable into your modem port (assuming you don't have a MBP) and the other end into the phone jack to allow the fax to go through?

Yes you can...assuming you don't have a digital phone line (which would be strange...as they're rare).
