So, here we go some time ago I commented on a video 'The iBook Guy' AKA 'The 8-Bit Guy' made titled 'PowerMac G5 - Is it Obsolete?' whereby I say "The PowerMac G5 quad is more powerful than the Mac Mini." and in his video he states that the Mac Mini Orignal is more powerful than the Power Mac G5 Quad, yeah the Power Mac G5 Quad vs a Mac Mini 2006! Here's the point in the video where he says it, so much cringe o_O: LINK. In another video that he subsequently removed he stated that given 20 years he could create AI, yeah frigging create AI talk about the Dunning–Kruger effect, everyone was taking the piss out of him and thumbing down his video so he ended up removing the video claiming copyright infringement, that video was also very cringe, it can be seen here: LINK. I'm not really sure this guy knows what he's talking about half the time, though his videos are entertaining none the less.

I just wanted some backup on that comment "The PowerMac G5 quad core is way more powerful than the Mac Mini." as there are so many retarded fanboys saying the Mac Mini 2006 is a more powerful computer than the PowerMac G5, which is annoying because it is a far less powerful a machine.

Anyway, I know which one I want running on the cold winnter nights keeping me warm and it's most certainly not the Mac Mini. ;)

Rant over.

Well, I highly doubt that a 2006 Mac Mini, especially the Core Solo models, can come close to touching the G5 Quad but 2007/2008 Intel macs outperform the G5 Quad at least in benchmarks due to architecture differences.

About the 8-bit guy, I've been watching his stuff for a while and I think that you're giving him too much of a hard time. He knows what he's talking about and he does decent content. If someone says something you don't agree with (or something inaccurate), it doesn't mean that they don't know what they're talking about half of the time.

Don't get me wrong, I love PowerPC Macs too but in terms of raw performance in benchmarks, Intel CPUs normally smoke them. That being said, a P4 3.06GHz and a 1GHz G4 (+1MB L3 cache) are almost identical when browsing (Firefox and LWK respectively) with the G4 maybe being slightly better. Ironically, the P4 gets better benchmark scores IIRC

In benchmarks, yes a Quad beats a 2006 Mini but there are some areas the Mini wins simply because of optimisations the Intel CPU has over the G5. I recently sold my Quad but I used to compare it's performance with my 2006 Core Duo iMac - generallly the Quad beat it but the iMac could convert video much faster and handle javascript laden websites much better.

EDIT: In that video he had a really bad example of a Quad - it's thermal system was shot - blowing all the time.

It heavily depends on how you define 'more powerful'. Benchmarks? Photoshop? App loading time? All these tests presume that all applications are optimised for the platform they are running on. But that's usually not the case. Therefore it's nearly impossible to really compare two completely different platforms

In that 2nd video that you link to, judging from your comments, imho you have overlooked two essential aspects. It must be watched and taken with a HUGE pinch of salt, it's entertainment value is obvious and cannot be neglected. For those with a less than stellar sense of humor, I agree he should have commenced with a "Sarcasm On" prompt.
As for comparing the G5 Quad PowerMac with a Mac Mini, quite simply they are as different as apples are to oranges - both so enjoyable in their own way.

I like his videos, and I think he has almost always a huge knowledge of what he is talking about. In this occasion, though, I think he is not aware of what a Quad G5 can do at all. I believe he stopped following the PowerPC Macs world in 2010, and so he doesn't know of the great apps, tips and OSes available now on that Mac. Last, but not the least, it had a defective machine in that video, so, due to all these reasons that video is completely wrong.

I'd say this guy never leaves PowerPC world - just have a look on that enormeous amount of iBooks on his shelf!
He might also be right with his statement, as every Intel Mac handles internet tasks better than a PPC. (But they get really loud as i can prove with my black MacBook. And as a MacBook is right in front of me the noise disturbs me much more than an airplane underneath my desk.)
For all the 'computer means facebook and youtube' kids out there he might be right, but for everything else the PMG5 is much faster.
Still... it depends on how much a program is optimized. PS2 for example is always faster on a PPC as well as the early universal binaries

Well, I highly doubt that a 2006 Mac Mini, especially the Core Solo models,

Apple never shipped a computer with a CoreSolo processor. The first gen Intel Macs had CoreDuo processors, but by late 2006 pretty much everything had a Core2Duo(granted the C2D only really makes a difference in 64 bit apps).

Architecture optimizations do help a lot, but there's also no getting around the fact that even the earliest C2D Macs are a newer architecture than the G5.

I think comparing a CD Mini to a Quad is a stretch(I did have a 2006 CD Mini), but 2007 MacBooks and the like will easily out-perform a Quad for MOST tasks even when running PPC software.

The "original" Mac Mini was a 2005 G4, not a 2006. This was my first Mac Mini.

Apple never shipped a computer with a CoreSolo processor.

My second Mac Mini was a Core Solo.

Haha. I was a tad confused when I saw that Core Solo Mac Mini models existed! I wonder who came up with the idea..
Undoubtedly one of Apple's upsell tactics, so you'd have to pay extra if you must have the new fancy dual-core processor. At least they socketed the CPUs in the Mac minis back then, so today you can get an inexpensive 64-bit Core 2 Duo and put it in there. :)

I did just that and flashed the firmware so that I could use 4GB of RAM only for one of the memory slots to die shortly afterwards, which seemed to be a common failing of that first Intel Mini.

I enjoy the 8-Bit Guy's videos, and I even donated him my iBook G3 500MHz. However, as you said, there were major problems with the G5 video... and a 2006 Mac mini is in no way faster. Plus, he was using the G4 version of TenFourFox, which explains some of his problems with FaceBook and YT. And a person who uses TFFG4 on his G5 probably didn't install the tweaks either.

Rookie mistakes like that are exactly why I would question his knowledge of just about anything in his videos. Its one thing to screw up basic things like his does in a conversation with buddies, but if you're going to all the work to film, edit, and script a show for the purpose of education, you sure as heck shouldn't be making errors like that. He's got some cool toys, but I would bet just about any of the regulars in this sub, myself included, know a great deal more than he does.

"I'd much rather go with even a G4 Mac Mini than a G5" lol, whatever dude.

The video was probably his worst. The PowerMac was having liquid cooling system failure, and David has retaliated those who dare say it was that their comments were "hate mail".

How do I know the system had LCS failure? Because the unit severely underperformed compared to what many amongst us have been able to get out of the Quad and even DP/DC units, and there were some alarming stains inside the case indicating coolant had leaked at some point.

And more importantly, Curtis Murray, the relative of David who lent him the PowerMac G5 (he's even mentioned in the video) himself replied to a comment of mine on a Low End Mac Facebook Group post about the video, wherein I stated the unit must have problems, that he indeed also thought it was having liquid cooling failure. Basically, the guy who owns the Mac knows it does, yet David has steadfastly refused to admit this.

We need backup now!!

RandomGamingHD, one of my fave YouTubers showed off an MDD PM G4 and bloody hell, he did an appaling disservice.

He didn't even install Leopard/Tiger and OS9 along with LWK or TFF to show off its real power. Now, he may turn it into a PC; a big disservice to a great and mostly non damaged PM G4

He's fully succumbed to making clickbait n00b videos. Some of the older stuff was mildly interesting, suspect that YouTube Play button has gone to his head...

Wouldn't say his stuff is bad but this video in particular makes him look like a total n00b since he clearly didn't do one ounce of research into it. He has also passed some remarks that are a tad on the stupid side of things but I think that his videos are still entertaining, bar the PM G4 video and maybe a few others, until now at least.

Main problem is probably his subscribers. The top comments on the PM G4 video are totally pathetic and feel like they were written by 8-11 year olds that don't know the first thing about anything before the Core i series and prefer a lot of flashy gaming lights with crappy designs rather than a decent and classic Macintosh
