Send iMessages from iOS 5 to a iOS 4 device.

Hello,

I have just bought my first iPod touch 4g white.

I have some friends that are still using iphone 3G that runs on iOS 4.

I am wondering is it possible to send an iMessage from an iOS 5 device to a device running iOS 4?

It's my understanding that iOS5 initiated the iMessage capability and I think both devices have to be on iOS5 for it to work. Not positive, though.

No, it's not possible. The functionality was introduced in iOS 5.

Not iPods / iPads though. Just phones (any phone with SMS will work, messages will be colored Green).

The OP has an iPod touch, so it won't be able to send as an SMS

Ya. iPods (and wifi-only iPads) have to use the iMessage to text. No wireless connection in either to handle the regular SMS.
