Sending a Jailbroken IPhone back to AppleCare

Hey everyone. Great site and thanks for all the help!

I have an interesting issue where my IPhone is just out of luck with the battery. No matter how I charge it I get the low red battery on the iphone. I can't turn it on or anything and have tried different chargers, machines, ITunes, nothing will recognize it. I'd bet the battery is just dead.

I called AppleCare and they are sending me a new iPhone. However is there a problem with sending them my hardware back (my original phone)? I should say I have never dropped the phone, its in immaculate condition. I'd also add I don't believe that jailbreaking the phone was the reason for the root problem as the phone had been functioning fine for a while and I hadn't downloaded any new apps or anything until my battery issue happened.

Any suggestions? I would restore the phone if I could but I just can't seem to get in at all. My guess is Apple will replace the battery and then resell the phone but by replacing the battery they will turn it on and see my setup (despite not having the SIM card because as I understand everything is stored on the phone).

But when they get his defective jailbroken iPhone, back, they will claim jailbreaking is why his battery died. The customer relations department claimed that my iPod touch was not waking up from sleep because part of the rubber gasket was damaged, and dust, and debris was causing the issue. The issue was OS 3.1, and was fixed with 3.1.2. Then when I took it apart, I didn't find dust, that they claimed was the issue. BAD APPLE!!
 
Plug it in for a couple of min. and hold the power & home buttons to reboot it.

That does not work for me. I've tried all types of different things but I can't seem to get into the phone at all. No machine seems to recognize it. If I could I'd just refresh the phone myself.
 
After some research I may have to buy a replacement battery and try and replace it and see if it turns on and then I can restore the phone. The phone is already going back to them so I am not too afraid to void the warranty by opening up the casing to the phone.
 
If you have left the phone on a wall charger overnight and it won't charge, then it's not gonna charge for Apple either. They will just send it out to be refurbed.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks, I guess I was thinking that upon Apple receiving it, they will just replace the battery and then it will work and then notice that I HAD jailbroken it and contact me notifying that I need to pay for the replacement.

Am I being too paranoid about this?
 
I actually think your phone is pretty much fried. Same exact thing happened to a friend of mine. He was jailbroken as well. Went in to Apple store and they gave him a refurb. I agree with the above. If you can't get into it Apple most likely will not be able to either and will just refurb it.

Let us know though. :)

Thanks but if the phone is fried how would they 'refurb' it? Its essentially useless. My guess would be they would need to change the battery on it to make it work.
 
So in your opinion, is it worth getting a battery and trying to replace it on the phone so I can restore it or should I just send it back the way it is?

Has anyone experienced a situation where this has happened?
 
No. If you replace the battery and then cause damage you won't get a refurb and you might get charged for your troubles and you will get your phone back.

Just send it back. They shouldn't look at your phone. What reason have they got to look at the phone which is full of personal data? Imagine the trouble they would get in to if they looked at your phone full of your data

I'll assume it's going to be a warranty replacement and I'll assume if it's a warranty replacement, it's a 3GS (I know, alot of assumptions but you didn't give much info)

All the refurb 3GS (so far) are coming with old baseband and hopefully 3.1.2 firmware, so..... if you get one like this..... you can jailbreak (un-tethered jailbreak) and unlock it. If it's updated to 3.1.3, you cannot jailbreak or unlock.

If it's a 3G, doesn't matter unless it's updated to 3.1.3 then you can jailbreak but not unlock.

Thanks for that info. I received my warranty replaced iphone 3gs yesterday. It was 3.1.2 and its already jailbroken using blackrain. No problems there. I don't have a need to unlock it.

My concern has always been around sending my old iphone back to them (I have a couple weeks to send it back) and in the state it is in.

Believe me they are not going to do a forensics exam on the phone. Likely it will be received in a warehouse location then chucked into the box with all the other refurb candidates.

I think you are way over-thinking this.
