Sending in iPhone to Apple for battery replacement--will Apple always replace the phone itself instead of just the battery? I don't really want my phone replaced. Can I specify that they not do this? What are your experiences?

Thanks.

If they can effect a repair by simply replacing the battery they will do that. If it costs them less to replace your phone and refurb your old one (which goes back into the system) they will do that as well.

You cannot give them instructions as to what you want, they won't acknowledge them. They will do whatever is best for Apple.

If it's is possible for you, geographically, take your phone into an Apple store. Just make an appointment first , and backup your phone in advance just in case, and they'll do a battery swap onsite within an hour.

Awesome. Thanks. Did not know that.

So if im paying for replacing the battery, they replace my phone? No way they can do it.

Are you talking about replacing the battery under a warranty??

Apple's policy has always been to replace.

A couple years ago they started equipping their stores to repair because that was more economical for them. But they determine ultimately whether a device will be repaired or replaced as that is their discretion.

It does not mean that if you send in for a new battery and they are charging you for that, that they will then give you a replacement and charge you for a replacement. They would replace, but only charge you for the battery.

I will give you an example, although it's not battery related…

My local Apple store has the ability to repair devices. So, I went in to have a cracked screen replaced. This was around the time of iOS 9.0 being released. They had me restore my phone. I waited an hour. They came back and told me that they could not get my device to boot, so they were replacing it entirely. That was their discretion. But all they charged me for was the screen replacement - because that's all I was there for.

In all probability OP's battery will simply be replaced, but I am simply covering the range of what could happen.

Did they replace with the identical phone?

I wonder whether they ever upgrade the phone because they no longer have the same model and color and size?

It was identical. It is ALWAYS identical.

Color, capacity, lock status, model. Apple does not do warranty upgrades. You can trade the new one in for an upgrade though. Apple will accomodate you on that.

There are exceptions, but those exceptions are usually a result of previous problems. A guy I know bought two iPhone 5c's. Six exchanges later after countless trips to the Apple store, numerous phone calls to AppleCare support and elevation of his problem Apple replaced his 5c with a 5s. But that's what he had to go through to get it. He would have just been happy with a 5c that worked.

Right now there is some rumor that the iPhone 5 is being replaced with the SE, but I'm not sure how credible that is.

But in general, what I said above about identical is true.
