I think the OP was asking about a macOS app.
Clicking your link on my Mac takes me to a page to download Google Maps. Clicking the Download link at their page results in a page that says "This app is available only on the App Store for iPhone and iPad."That's exactly what I linked to at MacUpdate. It's a MacOS download.
It appears to be only for iOS and iPadOS.
There has never been a "Google Maps" app, per se, for the Mac, only Google Earth.
And like every Google application, it brings along the Keystone auto-updater framework, and the possibility of things like this.
Apple Maps for the Mac desktop started with 10.9.

Well, as you can see, there is a native Google Maps app for MacOS -- but I lost the original installer, and all I can do is to enjoy it in my super old iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011)
I used to have this app but I had trouble getting it back for a while. The 'install' option (at least on Chrome on my Mac) is inside the address bar at the right hand side and is a downward arrow going into a computer screen. That just looks like you are running the PWA (progressive web app) version. If you have chrome or a chromium browser installed that supports PWA you can do that.
There is no installer, you just open up maps.google.com in chrome browser and there will be an “install” option on the right side of the address bar. It'll just create a Google maps icon in your application folder that can be run as a PWA but that is not a standalone app.
