Does anyone know the difference between the following two settings ostensibly describing the same thing:
  • Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update > Advanced > Install app updates from the App Store
  • App Store > Preferences > Automatic Updates
The first one doesn't appear to install any app updates from the App Store when available.

macOS Big Sur 11.6.

Hi! These settings appear to be interdependent (according to Support Esentials book):
- Install app updates from the App Store—You can select this option; it is unselected by default. After you select it, the App Store automatically installs updates to App Store apps. If you select this option, the option Automatic Updates is selected in App Store preferences. Likewise, if you deselect Automatic Updates in App Store preferences, the option “Install app updates from the App Store” is unselected in Software Update preferences.
- Automatic Updates—You can select this option if you have administrator credentials. Also, if you turn on automatic macOS updates in an Updates Available alert or in Software Update preferences, this option is selected. When you select this option, the App Store downloads and installs app updates automatically.
