Separate OS

I'm not sure if this has been brought up yet, but what are the odds that a new OS can be written/added to the phone? Pardon if this is a stupid question, but I'm not as tech savvy as most, but if it can be done with computers, what are the odds that it can be done with the phone?

thats why i ask. I use linux on my laptop, and I absolutely love the idea and what Linux stands for. I'm sure some good things could be done.
