So I bought a used MBP through a friend and on the about this Mac it says it is an early 2011 and shows specs but when I punch the serial number (matches on the bottom and in the about this Mac) it comes up as a 2009 model. I haven't found anything about this but I did hear it is possible to change the about this Mac to show a newer model when it is an actual model. Anyway I'm hoping someone can confirm this. The memory and everything fits the 2009 model.

Reboot and hold Cmd-Opt-R at the boot chime. If it goes to Internet Recovery then it's definitely a 2011 (2009 didn't have IR). If it doesn't, then there's no proof either way (not all 2011s had it).

What are you using to verify the serial number?

Weird that the About This Mac would say a different model.
At least back in the Snow Leopard days, you could edit a system .plist file and say you were running a different version of OS X than you actually were.

Did you run a clean install?

Obviously, someone replaced the bottom case.

The information is the "About this Mac" is what matters.

According to the OP, the case and About This Mac match.

Apple's site is not infallible; it tells me that my keyboard has an invalid serial number, and I bought that directly from Apple.

Does the App Store let you download Sierra?

Sorry for the late reply guys...I've checked out the Apple site and the specs on my about my Mac fit the 2009 model not the 2011 model that it says it is.

It won't let me post photos for some reason on here
[doublepost=1476687352][/doublepost]The serial number on the bottom matches the about this Mac also

A Core2Duo 2.53GH is definitely a 2009. There was a thread some time ago, showing how easy it is to change the 'about this mac information'. So sorry OP, you have been conned.
