Hey everyone,
At the end of April, I cracked the screen on my Watch and as I didn’t have AppleCare, I got a new watch out of warranty. This has worked fine for the first couple of months, but around the end of May, I’ve noticed an issue whereby the watch wrist detection basically no longer works - the always on display doesn’t work and the watch wants me to enter a passcode when I use it even when it remains on my wrist.

I contacted Apple when the issue started (during the 90 day warranty) but the advisor thought it was a software problem and wanted some logs. I then decided to restore my iPhone and watch to factory settings but that hasn’t solved the issue - now I’m starting to think it’s a hardware problem ?. Ive tried with multiple bands too with no effect. Apple will happily repair it for me if I pay the out of warranty fee which IMO is a little ridiculous considering the issue started before warranty expired. Anyone else run into the same issue, or has any tips to get my watch fixed? Thanks in advance ?

Interestingly I have the opposite issue (series 6).

I have a braided loop band. Some times when I take my watch off I will set it down so the loop is cushioning the watch. There is enough tension in the loop that the watch stays above the loop a bit like below.

More often than not I will notice that the watch won't automatically lock. I think it depends on how quickly I remove the watch and put it down. It's almost as if the watch detects the band as my wrist.

If I move the watch to create more space between it and the band, then it will lock
