I have a suspicion that there won’t be much to differentiate the 7 and the 8; doubt they’re severely changing the design after having just done so and invalidating the thousands of bands people already own, and there aren’t many huge health features they can add yet. Coveted, societally-changing health features like blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring definitely not dropping anytime soon.
The only real difference between the 6 and 7 was the 7 getting a *slight* redesign with the larger screen and fast charging. I figure the 8 and 9 will keep the same design as the 7 and add maybe one or two features and improvements, and different case colors/materials. Maybe they’ll surprise and make a larger 49mm Watch or something but at the moment there isn’t much they can do.
Better battery, maybe a FaceTime camera? That might just be gimmicky enough to be enough.
Series 8
solid rumors?
- skin temperature sensor will be added. will primarily aid in women's monthly cycle tracking and perhaps helping make sleep times more accurate. some other devices use this to alert to fevers (it measures skin temp but can see body trends when in relatively stable environments like sleep) but I am skeptical Apple will use it for this at least at first.
- faster CPU, faster wifi, better item position tracking (the ability to precisely locate those Apple AirTags etc.)
shakier rumors?
- better battery life for the first time... ever.
BUT HERE IS THE BIGGY:
HEAVILY rumored NEW "rugged" sports/outdoors Apple Watch, the first new category of the Apple Watch besides the main lineup and the SE. This may well be the "flat sided" watch we keep hearing about. Rumors are it will be larger and more rugged and likely have a significantly larger battery to allow for long GPS battery life (at least 24 hours with GPS on) which would give at least 2-4 days of "normal" battery life. I think this is SUPER LIKELY and it a major reason why use see major new running and workout features that target even very lengthy and battery consuming sports like Triathlon in the latest version of WatchOS 9. It may not be in a form factor everyone likes but I think a significant new Apple Watch is coming which will have a MAJOR jump in battery life, at least compared to all other Apple Watches, if not to real dedicated sports watches from the likes of Garmin and Polar.
