Hi all,

just curious, whether the Series 8 and the AWU 1 really share the same SIP (S8), as stated in numerous forum posts in the internet.
According to the official Apple website, the S8 in the AWU 1 has in addition a 4-core neural engine (such as in Series 9, Series 10 and AWU 2)

Best regards

Probably a mistake on the website. The four core Neural engine was "new" for the Ultra 2. Maybe the Ultra 1 had the engine and they kept it quiet, and then the Ultra 2 had a newer four core engine than the Ultra 1, so they made a song and dance about it, but that seems unlikely.

It's difficult to know though because Apple isn't particularly transparent about detailed specifications and they have made mistakes in the past too.

Oddly all the documentation I have seen show that the S4 through S8 chips all had 2 core neural engines (S4 & S5 based on a cut down A12 and S6, S7 & S8 based on a cut down A13) with the S9 and S10 chips having a 4 core neural engine (based on the A16) so I do wonder if the info on the Apple site is an error, or if they did actually make a variant of the S8 chip with a larger neural engine (seems unlikely but you never know).

Hi,

this is interesting, and we probably won‘t get any information from apple.Maybe it is a variant of the S8.
I could not imagine that Apple distributes wrong information on their official site; but maybe yes they are wrong (?). The S9 definately has a 4-core NE
