Serious Help: data recovery

Hey everyone.

I need some serious help.

I have a HP media vault (MV5000) with all my iTunes on it.

One of the disk drives failed during a backup and I have to recover all my data as both original and back up are toast.

I need to recover data from the media vault , it is a NAS.

One of the drives does not mount (pink error light) but the NAS itself is fine. It is hard drive fail and not NAS fail.

Anyone have any ideas how to do it?

I have looked all over the internet and nothing really seems to work.

I am running Lion and need just to recover the data.

Pull the drive, get one of these, download photorec, and cross your fingers.

If the drive is failed hard, you either have to do some platter/controller board transplanting or send it out to someone who will do that, which costs $$$, if not $$$$.

Thanks for that. However my data striped over two disks. Will it work if I have to do it over both of them?

I think it is more a logic failure no platter crash.

If the data is striped over two disk then that makes the recovery much harder, this software claims to be able to recover data from striped disk sets:-

Weather or not this will work if one of the striped disks is damaged I just don't know. It may be worth contacting the company to check before spending money on software that may not work.

Can I ask how was the back-up also damaged? And wouldn't it be easier to try recovering the back drive (I assume the back up is not on a striped disk)?

Also why would you use RAID 0 to begin with? All you gain is an increase in read/write speed, which for a device that is serving iTunes media, shouldn't really be needed.

I am using a HP media vault with one 1Tb and one 500GB drive setup as RAID with a 1.5TB USB drive as back up. The Media Vault has a USB backup system.

I was backing up when I had my problems. Backup is gone as well.

I'm confused about the comment about you having a 1tb and 500 gig drive set up as a raid 0...are they setup as RAID (striped) or JBOD (concatenated)? If they're JBOD, try using photorec, as it shouldn't matter. You'll just have to do both drives individually, and you'll lose files that span the two disks if any exist. If they're striped, well, that's kinda a waste of half a terabyte.

In any case, try using the software I suggested against the USB drive then. I'm sure the backup process doesn't write zero's to that before performing the backup. You should be able to get most of your data back that way unless the data drastically changed since the last backup.

I agree with mr.iso, it sounds like you're using JBOD mode, 1TB+500GB giving you 1.5TB of usable space, instead of RAID0 (striped), 1TB+500GB which would give you a 500GB striped drive and 500GB left as a normal drive.

And like mr.iso says, you should have more luck trying to recover the data on the backup drive as the only real corruption should be in the file that was being writen at the time of the main drive failure.

No. the backup was being made at the time the failure happened and it was a first time backup.

There is no backup.

That is my problem.

Any suggestions?

Take each drive out and use photorec against each drive. You'll most likely be able to recover most of your data. Chances are that all files are contiguous.

Like I said earlier, any file that spans both drives will be lost, but if it's just media files, that shouldn't be a huge issue. You should be able to replace whatever you lost, right?

Also, when you use something like photorec, you lose all your filenames, so you'll have to go and rename all your files. iTunes & iEatBrainz should be able to help you with this for your music, but as far as movies, etc, you're on your own.
