The contender: iPhone 5 vs an Android One (Mi A1).

iPhone 5:
Pros: The ease of iOS, easy to backup/restore and manage, quality apps, encryption, security (for now)
Cons: Stuck in iOS10, will be vulnerable to future bugs

Android One
Pros: updates (already on Oreo with December 2017 security patch), will at least be updated timely for a year or two.
Cons: the nature of Android, more difficult to maintain/backup/restore, risk of insecure apps (even legit ones in Play store can gather a ton of personal information, and I've witnessed this with my own eyes from a developer friend).

Use: mostly business use, marketing, social media

I don't want fanboy-ish responses from either sides. I want frank opinions of which one would be a good workhorse phone (for business as well).

I understand your point.

To me, this is not about showing off/fashion. It's about usability and security.

I like iPhones in general as they are encrypted by default, and are extremely easy to backup/restore via iTunes/iCloud. However, the situation here is that the iPhone 5 is on iOS 10, which is no longer supported.
On the other side is a newer Android, which is up to date in terms of patches, but the general risks for Android is there, and the privacy issue is concerning. Plus it is harder to administer.

Always go Android One over a 5 year old device like the iPhone 5. You're overestimating Apple and underestimating Android. No phone is impervious to hackers. Apple's products were exposed to Krack and the other recent Intel related exploits as well. What good is a device that only offers 32bit programmed apps? You won't get much app support. Google allows you to backup stuff on their end. You do realize that FB, Instagram, Snapchat, etc will have access to your information regardless of OS? Go Android unless you want to spend $ on the iPhone SE.
