It's a unix thing. macOS doesn't know who owns the files on the external drive and thus requires admin privileges to modify them. Makes sense that they should work around it though.

My macOS Mojave never asks me for a password.

I have a couple of apps that ask more than once per session. It's very annoying.

Use the setting to ignore permissions on external drives:

(From https://iboysoft.com/ntfs-for-mac/external-hard-drive-shows-read-only-after-mojave-update.html )

Step 1: Select the external hard drive on your desktop or in the Finder sidebar, and then press Command-I to get information on the drive.

Step 2: Click on the arrow that is at the left side of the "Sharing & Permissions" tab near the bottom of the window.

Step 3: Check the box to "Ignore ownership on this volume", or toggle it off and then on if it's already enabled.
