I just won a Sun Microsystems Netra T105 server from ebay for $18. It does not have a hard drive. It has a CD-rom a 450MHz processor, and 512MB of ram.

What exactly can I do with this? I planned on using it for a Counter-Strike Server but I have no clue how to. It has no VGA and no place to put a video card. Can I use this as a Counter-Strike server? If so, how?

If I can't make a CS server with it, what exactly CAN I do?

i think it has a solaris processor in. usless for counter strike but a web server, file server, or something you put in a box and ship to me are all good things...

I've googled a bit, and it looks like you connect another machine to it via serial or network and actually work via an ssh or telnet session. It'll almost certainly be running Sun's UNIX variant (SunOS, later named Solaris).

It's possible you could get a Linux dedicated game server running on Solaris using its Linux Kernel Personality.... but I'm by no means confident that's a certainty.

Ah - wait a sec, this page here seems to suggest that you can indeed run Linux. However, the box will be using a SPARC processor of some variety, not an Intel i386-compatible, so, unless the relevant companies have provided SPARC builds of their dedicated servers (unlikely), you're out of luck I'm afraid.

yes that is it solaris operating system and sprac processor, its an odd ball. there maybe a freebsd or linux that can run on it.

IIRC they take SCSI disks, you'll need one in a spud bracket, you can probably pick one or two (for mirroring or striping) from ebay fairly cheaply these days. Check the docs linked below for more details as to what you need

Do you know much about Solaris? If not now's your chance to learn. Otherwise you could put a version of Linux that supports Sparc on it. I believe Ubuntu/Debian does as does Gentoo.

As to what to use it for... A web server, a mail server, a dns server, a file server, etc...

No it won't show up in your network places. The quick answer goes something like this.

1 - Get at least 1 drive for it
2 - Download Solaris 10 from Sun (it's free).
3 - Get your serial connection working
4 - Install Solaris 10
5 - Configure ssh so you can connect remotely to the server
6 - Configure Apache and set up your website.

You could use Linux instead of Solaris if you know Linux, if not Solaris is more likelly to 'just work' once you've installed it.

If you don't know unix at all, you'll need to learn, or you could sell it on ebay
