When I try to add a printer I get the error "server error service unavailable" This is after it makes the connection to the printer and picks the ppd. Any clue. I have tried rebooting and repairing permissions. I know this is some wonky unix thing.

Help would be appreciated.

What type of printer are you adding? Is it local via USB or is it a network printer running TCP/IP?

I have the same error, but with USB...

Hey guys,

I'm having the same error message with my Canon i960, which has stopped working out of the blue. I'm connected via USB, and the Printer Setup Utility recognizes the printer, but when I click ADD i get the error message

server-error-service-unavailable

Is there a fix?

Kerry

nevermind!

I found a fix on the HP site.... here it is, should anyone else have the same error message:

In Mac OS X version 10.3.x, an error of server-error-service-unavailable appears while adding the printer.
SOLUTION:

1.****** Create a New Folder on the desk top by pressing Shift+Command+N.

2.****** Rename the folder cups.

3.****** Click Go in the menu bar then Go to Folder.

4.****** Enter /var/spool.

5.****** If there is a cups folder, drag it from the folder and into the trash (if there is no folder, go to Step 6).

Hold down the Command key as the folder is dragged out of the finder window. Release the Command key as the folder is about to be deposited in the trash. This removes the need for authentication.

NOTE: You must be an administrative user whoever for this function to work

6.****** If there was no cups or you removed it, drag the new folder into the /var/spool finder window, authentication might be required.

7.****** Reboot the Mac

8.****** Open the Hard Drive and go to Applications, Utilities and open Disk Utility.app.

9.****** Select Partition in use.

10.** Select the First Aid tab.

11.** Press the Repair disk permissions button and allow it to complete.

12.** Reboot once more and try and add the printer again.

Not working for me...

I have tried various methonds including the one above, but it still bring up the same error whilst trying to install a printer!!

Does anyone else have any more ideas?
