server name and dns

Hi all,

Im setting op a local server (leopard server). I have about 5 clients. locally the server will be used for print, ical, file sharing, roaming profiles and a local wiki. Clients from outside the network will have the ability to connect via VPN and FTP. We have a website hosted (http://www.mydomain.com) by a hosting company. server.mydomain.com is automaticly redirected to out ipadress.
My question is how i should name my server? should i create a server.local for ical, print, roaming profiles, filesharing and wiki, and another server.mydomain.com for VPN and FTP services? And do i have to setup a local dns server?

I'm totally confused about this

the simplest way would be to create mydomain.local on the local server.

so your FQDN for the server would be server.mydomain.local, your clients would be client1.mydomain.local and so on.

DNS on the server then forwards any queries that aren't for mydomain.local to your ISP's DNS servers so that internet and you own domain are resovled.

Thanks for the advise. I've set up a local domainname as you said.
But how does DNS on the server knows to which ISP DNS servers it has to forward?

well, I'm normally in a windows enviroment ("unclean! Unclean!" )

Waiting for my copy of Leopard server to arrive, but from what I'm reading, try:

Open Server Admin on the management computer.
Click the triangle to the left of the server - The list of services appears.
Click DNS. Click Settings.
Click the Add (+) button below the “Forwarder IP Addresses” list to add networks that unauthorized queries get forwarded to (usually your ISP's DNS servers, or try opendns.com's )
Click Save.
