Hi,

I have brought a mac mini that i am using as a media server on my home network, i save all my files from my mac air and pro onto the mac mini (each user has there own folder)

Im wanting to access these files remotely, so if i was on my mac air to a friends house then i could just open my music folder (saved on my mac mini) and still connect as normal

is this possible and had anyone done this?

You can set up remote access on the server in sharing settings and the air sometimes will access it if the Apple ID is right. But I find Team Viewer is better for outside access. I use remote access in the house and Team Viewer when I travel.

If you have Back to my Mac enabled on all of your machines they will all show up in Finder under the shared.

All you have to do is click the Mac you want access to and if file sharing is enabled on that Mac, you click "Connect As." in the window that appears to the right within Finder.
Connect As = Log in to that remote computer with the username and password you would normally use to log in with.

2 of those on my list are 10 miles and 25 miles away.

You can also remote desktop in this way if you have Screen Sharing enabled on your server Mac.

If you have an all Mac ecosystem using the same AppleID this works great as it is built in to every Mac.

Ive set up back to my mac it works fine when I'm on the same network, when i try to connect remotely it says connection failed but i can still use 'share screen'

anyone have any ideas what could cause this?

If you're at work, maybe they block some ports. Try configuring the server port on something like 443 (https).
