When I get my Max on Friday, I plan as setting up as new. The only reason why I haven't done this before is that I'd lose messages and health. Obviously now we have messages and health in iCloud.

Has anyone successfully set up as new, and proven that messages and health do indeed sync back down successfully from iCloud?

I'm not talking about an iCloud restore, but messages and health data being configured to use iCloud, and then syncing back down to a new setup.

Thanks

Previously messages ere back up in the iCloud back up. Now they are outside of the back up entirely. So there isn’t much difference in restoring from a back up and setting up as new if you when it comes to messages.

On that note I got a new iPad from work. Set it up as new and turn on messages in iCloud and they all sync’d or at least the messages were there and attachments would download. This was on iOS 11 but assuming you don’t run into a big iOS 12 should work similarly.

Great it works as expected! Messages was always the reason I restored and glad that's no longer the case

Just need confirmation of health data now

Oops.

Its backed up in iCloud like messages, notes, etc. Signing back in should sync.

If you are really concerned go into the Health App on your current phone when you are about to switch. Click on the silhouette in the upper right corner. Click on "Export Health Data", save it to Files (iCloud). On the new device just selecting that file will allow you to import to all or certain sections of the Health App. However I would suggest allowing iCloud to sync it and not force anything to avoid things getting messed up.

Cheers. TBH if health doesn't work, I'll just restore from backup.

Maybe I can piggyback in this thread with another enquiry on iMessage in iCloud.

My current setup has iPhone and iPad imessage in the cloud, so deleting from one device clears on the other.

My iMac, however, is not set to sync to cloud. I therefore have a locally stored copy of iMessages.

I’m wondering what happens if I turn on iMessage sync to cloud on the iMac? Will it upload its stored messages, making them available to the mobile devices or are these messages marked as deleted on iCloud and thus will get removed from the iMac?

If you are worried about corruption of some kind screwing with the new iOS and you have to restore from backup then I’d go in and do a ‘reset all settings’. That seems to be the stuff that goes screwy with a new iOS.

I just did a clean install with my iPhone 7 this week. I can confirm that your iMessages will be restored to your new phone as long as you have iMessage on iCloud enabled (one quirk was that once I did the fresh install of iOS 12, I had to go into Settings and manually turn on iMessage on iCloud; i.e. it's not enabled by default).
I can also confirm that health data will be resynced via iCloud as long as you have it set to sync in your iCloud settings.

I’ve always been curious about this exact situation. My hope is that Messages would default to restoring data before deleting it, but if someone knows for sure I’d appreciate the answer too.

I had to get the screen on my X replaced yesterday due to the sensors in the notch not registering the earpiece. I had backed up Health and iMessage to the cloud prior to going to the Apple Store. They downgraded my SW back to 11.4.1 and I restored the 11.4.1 backup I had before I enrolled in the iOS 12 beta program. My health and iMessage were all restored perfectly on 11.4.1.

Health restores just fine. Did it last year with my 8Plus. It takes a long time to download, but leave it plugged in and locked. It will restore health and activity. You will see the activity app/data once you repair your Apple Watch to the new device.
