Setting preferences to open word in browser (not save to desktop)

Hi

Would like to change preferences using IE 5.1, and Netscape 7.1, in Mac 0S 8.6, to open office documents in the brower. I have Microsoft
office 98 installed, and all links to office documents in
IE & Netscape keep saving to the desktop - when all i want to do is
view the documents. Anyone know how?

Here's a possible solution for IE. I can't test it because I have OS X and a newer version of IE (and use Safari as a primary browser), but try the following:

Go to preferences, under 'Receiving Files' select 'File Helpers'. Click add and put in the appropriate information. Eg for Word:
Extension:.doc
MIME type: applicaton/msword
File type: WDBN
File creator: MSWD
Application: Microsoft Word
etc

Not sure if this will work, but give it a go.

Is this something that can be done in OS X? This would be particulary useful for .pdf documents.

In Safari, go to Preferences, General tab, then click on the 'Open "safe" files after downloading' checkbox.

For pdf, I don't think you can view it using Preview. However, there is a cross-browser plugin that lets you see pdfs in the browser. Highly recommended.

I just noticed that the same company has a Word browser plugin. I haven't tried it, and I don't view that many word docs on the internet, but it might b worth a try if you're using OS X.

There is a plugin available for Safari to view PDF files, but it's not as fast as Preview, though it is faster than Acrobat Reader.

I know how to get the file to open after it downloads, my question is if there is a way toi get it to open up directly in Safari.

Thanks HexMonkey, you were right ... though file type i ended up using was W8DN...

Thanks again - going make my job of tech checking edu sites on macs much easier ...
