i own a little design company called Mcfluffit design (www.mcfluffit.com)
i dont put all my time into as such as im still a student, but one ting ive learnt is that pricing is absolutely crucial.

Looking at your site you are very cheap in comparison to most as a normal web design would average about £550 ($1000???) for a 6 page website <ish>

However i don't like to charge high prices either as it just sends customers away, so id say your definitely on the right track there. What i would suggest is that when your first in contact with a customer and giving them quotes make sure you make perfectly clear how much work you will do for the set price, for instance dont just say £200 a website as there idea of a website might be much bigger than you thought!

another thing is to charge hosting/maintenance monthly rather than yearly as it really does make the price seem less to the customer and there more likely to return to you in future and you can keep a steady cash flow throughout the year, week by week that way.

i know this is problem obvious stuff and maybe not what you where looking for in terms of advice but i hope i mite have helped.

p.s. i dont mean to sound like i know a lot, i only know a little so this is just my take on it all, im pretty sure my figures are right roughly. Also what uni are you in at Wales? (or at least ur location says wales)...

add a portfolio, about us, etc...

that kind of basic page wont get my attention if im looking to hire someone for website development

You should definately add a portfolio page and the prices are a little low, In my opinion those should be your starting prices and increase the cost according to the difficulty and scale of the project.

Yes i will add a portfolio page when i have finished all my jobs i will have time to do the company site, but as it says it is in development.

I was hoping for business tips not design tips.

Also the prices are marked as FROM, eg £200 would be a site with few pages

Don't tell too many people about your little website because I couldn't see myself hiring you with that website. It tells me you haven't any imagination whatsoever...as a business owner, I wouldn't want to put my money in your hands. Sorry to sound harsh, but the website tosses me off big time.

yep, y? do you know me?

Nah, but I never find people from the same place as me, and it's crazy that I'd find someone on the internet from the same university, considering it's not that well known in the UK.
Good to know there are other Mac users here though, thought I was the only one!

I will do a BIG design nearer the summer but i am getting clients by word of mouth so thought better to have something rather than nothing!

Yer thats probs the best thing to do. Finsh your cients jobs then spend some hard hours on your portfolio site. :)

I am leaving uni this year with a computing degree

I am setting up a web / graphic design company (Millwood Online)
http://www.millwoodonline.co.uk Havent got much time to make my site because doing some others already

any tips?

My tip is: If you are a web design company, never let anyone see your own website until it is brilliant.

Potential customers will assume what you show to see what you have to offer. If your website is good, it will attract customers, if it is bad, it will drive them away.

Would you let a mechanic work on your car if his keeps on breaking down? Same situation.

here's a great FREE e-book to get you started in the web design industry

Thanks for that, looks a good read.

I am going to seek business advice, get grants, setup a proper limited company and do it right.

I will change the name to put behind and lean from the mistakes of Millwood Online over the last 5 years (on and off).
