I am new to this but not to computer networking or OS X however I think I have bitten off more than I can chew.

I purchased an HP proliant NL40 and want to put my Iphoto library and itunes library on it and run squeezebox and maybe an IRC client.

I have no monitor now I use an iMac and have had very little success in finding step by step guides for newbies. Anyone able to suggest a distro or an easy network install? Is OS X server best for my needs?

Thanks

Wasn't the HP Miniserver supposed to use HP's customized version of Windows Home Server 2003? That included some Apple specific features, as I recall.

Outside of that, you probably won't have an easy time getting Lion Server to work without a monitor on the system you are trying to set it up on. Perhaps there's some Linux distros that are designed for that purpose. I think those little HPs have something of a following, so I'd imagine there's a forum or website specific to them you might want to try and Google.

I hope this helps get you going in the right direction.

I pretty sure you are going to need a monitor for initial setup. Once your running you will not need it.As far as software goes I think you should stick with WHS 2011, Ubuntu or Amahi.
