I've got a new 20" iMac 2.4GHz for work (print design). I going to add loads of RAM, but what can people recommend doing with it regarding setting up partitions? Does this help with performance?

Since the partitions will be on the same drive it wouldn't help performance much. The only thing it would possibly help is maintenance since you could keep the system and the data files on separate partitions. If you find that useful then go for it, but otherwise leave it as it is.

I don't know how partitions would really help your cause if you're a graphic designer. That's more my lack of knowledge than anything. However, I guess you could drop 40 gb that is dedicated to your graphic design applications so they're paging from the same partition and the rest can just house everything else.

Partitions will not improve performance, and may eventually cause headaches if none of the partitions is large enough to store very large files.(such as uncompressed video captures)

I'd recommend that you add an external firewire drive.
The G-Drive is a very good aesthetic match to the new iMac.
