I plan on picking up my shiny new 2.2Ghz MacBook Pro within a couple of hours.

To get started, I'd like to wipe the drive and re-install to have only the languages I want on there. Now should I calibrate the battery first? Do I need to calibrate the battery at all? Can I wait and calibrate the battery later?

Sorry to add yet another thread and ask these questions, but I want the most performance I can get for the longest time possible.

Also, any tutorial on what to do to transfer my settings, etc from my antique (16 VRAM iBook G3) to my new machine? Should I even bother, or start fresh?

Thanks ahead of time for your responses. This will be my first Intel Mac, and my first Mac period in over 4 years, so I am a little rusty at setting things up the way I like them. (Though I know it is a lot easier than Windows, where I'd have to jump through hoops to get it to work the way I like it.)

One last thing: When I wipe the drive, should I zero the data?

You must be a big windows user, re-installing the os would be a waste of time.

no not a bad idea really. I did this on my brand new macbook pro because it had a lot of stuff I didn't want on it and I needed every last bit of hd space. I deleted the printer drivers (about 1 gig) and all languages and also opted not to install aperture, iwork, ms office trial versions so I saved myself a few gigs of space.

i had initially imported my user accounts from my powerbook but I was certain something wasn't right so I just did a total reinstall.

I believe the printer drivers take up over 2GB of space. I just did a fresh reinstall of OS-X last night and cut it down to about a 9-10GB install. It only took about an hour also. No waste of time really. The longest wait was while it verified the install DVD. I also removed the aperture demo, iwork, iweb, ms office demos, etc. Well worth the wait IMO.

Please calibrate your battery, or you'll be back here next week asking if 96% full charge is normal!

Can't you just delete those folders? That's what I did and I regained a lot of space. Is OSX like windows, it leaves registry keys behind after you delete programs?

So is the consensus that I should calibrate the battery? Also, should I do it now, or can I wait until the weekend, and use the machine until then? I want the most usability!

And I want to get rid of the unnecessary languages. Coming from a 20gb hard drive on this machine, I am very careful of space. I know I will have about 6 times the hard drive space, but I'd like to keep that space open!

Sorry, about 8 times the hard drive space!

Here's a good free program that'll get rid of the unwanted languages:

Hey quick question:
When I get my new MBP if I want to clear up space on the HD before I start setting it all up, when you reinstall the OS from scratch do I get the choice of what exactly to install and not install? (Such as printer driver stuff, demo's of software I won't use, etc?) I'm clueless because I've only been a Mac user for a relatively short period of time and have never installed OS X from scratch before.

Should be fine to wait to calibrate the battery, just know that it might display like 98% when it is really full.
