Need a little help please ... I haven't done this in a long time but don't recall ever having this issue. I picked up a new XR today, began the setup as a new phone and updated iOS to 12.1 Then I logged in to iTunes on my PC, connected my old 6S (also running 12.1) and backed it up. Then connected up the new XR to restore the apps and data from the backup to the new phone. I get a dialog box that asks for a password?? Recall I am already logged into iTunes and was not prompted to make a separate backup password when I backed up the 6S. So I enter the AppleID/iTunes password and the restore fails due to wrong password? What did I do wrong?

Just helped someone the other day with this exact issue except with an iPad. Have a look:

Thanks, Matt, I just read the other thread. I am trying via iCloud now. I have only the free 5GB space so I am not sure this will work although I have filed most of my data off the phone so mostly just apps. This is very strange, last time I got a new phone iTunes restore worked perfectly. I know I changed that password once upon a time but don't remember when or what it was.

That did the trick, Matt. A little slower than doing it via iTunes but not terrible. Maybe I'll have to forget about iTunes going forward. Thanks, man!

Yeah not sure why iTunes does this either.

Glad you’re back in business, and yeah ditch iTunes! Take care!

That password requirement is the one that it asked you to setup when you becked up using encryption. I set this up many years ago in my iTunes backups.

Yesterday, I got my Max delivered. I backed up my 8+ so I could use it to restore to my new Max. When I restored that backup to my Max, I was prompted for that password and it proceeded to complete the restore. It's never failed me yet. The first time I ever tried to to do an iCloud restore, it failed so I have never trusted the iCloud for anything.
