Am I the only one that despises how crappy the phone makes your personal photos look when you set them as the wallpaper? WTF is up with that? It looks amazing in the photo app but then you set it as your wallpaper and its all crapped up. It brightens it up a ton and it makes it look as if its a mosaic. Whats up with this? My BlackJack did this also, but why does my iPhone? Me no likey!

Haven't had a problem with my pics as wallpaper. They look great.
Maybe check the resolution of the pics.

The resolution definitely isnt the problem considering they're extremely high resolution photos taken with a DSLR...besides the fact that they look great when viewing them in the photos app

Not experiencing this at all! My photo's that I have transfered over and using as wallpaper look great!

Are you transferring over the raw image? iTunes will compress it.

Odd that it does look good in the photo app though.

Nope, its just effing up my pictures when it sets them as my wallpaper. Every pic I've tried does this. "This is what the wallpaper will look like" my ass. Any suggestions? When you all look at the photo you have set as your wallpaper does it look the exact same as when viewed as the wallpaper? Maybe a restore could fix this for me?

Yeah something doesn't sound right. Even when I take a photo and zoom in a good bit it sill hold image quality pretty well.

Of course that is all based on the quality of the photo but it sounds like you have that covered.

I would try a reset, then maybe a restore if you have a backup already.

Then make a genius appointment and have them take a look. Might have something faulty in that thing.

Sounds like you have a problem. Have you tried a restore of the software?
Other than that I would take it to your Apple store.

I think I might try the restore and see how it goes. I cant remember if it's been doing this or if its a new issue that just popped up...I just want a damn picture of my girlfriend on the background thats the same quality as it should be!

i resize my pix to 320x480 before i sync em. i don't think itunes would do any compression with pix that are already formatted perfectly for the iphone.

that being said, my pix look fantastic.

When you say "photo app", what are you using? It sounds like you are getting small thumbnails, instead of your original as the source for iTunes (and I guess for your Blackjack, too).

By photo app I mean the the photo viewing app on the iPhone. They look fantastic on there and I can scale and zoom to my heart's desire, dandy. Set that same picture as my wallpaper and its like a stretched mess or something. I just restored it and still no dice.

Mine tend to look a little worse when used as wallpaper as well. These all all high quality photos taken with a dSLR. The look fine in the iPhone Photo app but when they are set as wallpaper then look a little grainy to me. I am not resizing the photos, I assume iTunes resizes when it pulls the pics out of Aperture. I wish there was a setting to choose a higher resolution synced photo.

Sorry to hear that, I haven't seen this happen on my iPhone.
I too would recommend doing a restore it fixed a few issues I had with my phone.

I'm willing to bet that when you're viewing them, they look fine because they're at native resolution, but when it's set as a wallpaper it may be creating a new, resized version of the image. Have you tried resizing a copy of the image to screen resolution on your Mac and then setting it on the iPhone?

I have tried this. No matter what I do, whatever I set as my wallpaper looks less sharp than when viewing the photo normally.

Use PNG whenever possible... the iPhone cannot scale JPEGs worth a damn.

Yup, create a new iPhoto album for your wallpapers. Take your huge originals and scale / frame them to be 320x480 and save them as a png file and put them into the album. Sync that album to your iPhone. All mine look just fine.

Good luck

You don't even need to scale/crop. The iPhone just has wonderful issues with certain image types. I downloaded a wallpaper meant for the desktop in GIF format. Once I set it for wallpaper, it looked like ass. Converted to PNG, no scaling, no cropping done on the desktop. Scales and looks great on the iPhone.
